Background Working Software Download
RescueTime has been part of my life For at least 6 years, but I’ve never sat down to write a RescueTime review until just a couple of months ago. Working Software Download
Declared my first year of self-employment. I took the opportunity to my tools and working procedures to make sure I had a good moment balance among all my own priorities.
After all — whether you are paid hourly or not, Your time is your sole non-renewable resource. It should be your time if you’re going to manage anything.
Since nearly all my priorities are on A pc — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core part of that.
Here’s my RescueTime review with pros, cons, use Instances and next steps based on my experience.
RescueTime is a time management & Productivity software firm founded in 2008. The RescueTime app runs in the background of your devices measuring tracking and categorizing your own activity.
RescueTime is a free program with a premium update That allows features and more reporting like moment input that is offline . It delivers a reporting dash with your information diced, sliced and sorted into graphs to assist you manage your own time.
The program relies on Peter Drucker’s (the famous Management consultant) maxim that”what gets measured, gets managed.”
RescueTime requires time’s tracking you actually track your time so that and makes it painless and automatic .
Nevertheless, there are dozens and dozens of Improvement & time management tools on the Internet. What are the pros & cons of RescueTime? Here’s what I’ve noticed through the years.

Rescuing Your Period
RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the, to reiterate Sense that it helps your time-management abilities improve. It collects data about the apps and sites you use, then generates reports based on that information.
You set up a and create an account to Begin Desktop app in your own computer(s) and optionally a mobile program on Android apparatus ) There’s no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from collecting the information it needs to perform its function. Those apps quietly and invisibly monitor which programs you use and which websites you visit, as well as the quantity of time you spend on these.
The tough nut to crack is how to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you must customize your account from the RescueTime site and tell the program more about what you believe productive versus unproductive action. The further you fine-tune it to your specific circumstances, the greater your results. As an instance, somebody who operates in the finances industry may classify reading financial news on web sites including MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity job, whereas for me, that’s an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize each program and site on a 5-point Scale of very productive, effective, impartial, dependable, and very unproductive. You could even categorize activity into work categorizes. By way of example, I list Google Docs as very productive, and I categorized it as Writing, and it is a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I’m trying to work, and I’ve categorized it .
In the desktop app, there is an easy set of controllers That lets you pause RescueTime for a quarter hour, one hour, or until tomorrow, providing you easy access to shifting the program off for breaks or days once you wrap up early.
When confronted with RescueTime’s proposal –We will track All you do and provide you insights about your habits! –some individuals might, justifiably, be worried about their privacy and the security of information in their hardware. Should you work with sensitive info on the internet or store sensitive information in your own computers and mobile devices, you’ll want to browse RescueTime’s privacy and security statements closely.
If your concerns are somewhat more relaxed and You Just Don’t Want RescueTime monitoring you on the weekend, so you’ve got control over the times and days the app monitors your behaviour. It is simple to set it to just watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever program suits you.
I have used RescueTime for years, and that I do not check my Productivity reports. I like to let the service run in the background so that when I really do want to find a better image of how I’ve been spending my time, a fantastic quantity of information is waiting for me.
When I do go through the reports, however, they are Magnificent. I love the variety, giving you get numerous ways of knowing your productivity and customs, from bar charts and pie charts that show lump sums of activity, to line things of applications you employed.
One simple but effective piece of information RescueTime Provides is an analysis of when during the daytime you tend to be the most successful. I was not surprised to see that my brain peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits pretty well with what I understand about my habits. If you’ve never studied your productivity, however, that may be a beneficial revelation for you, one which might help you schedule your times more .
The longer you use RescueTime Premium, the more applicable the Data becomes, because you can see your data daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, you can toggle which times and days RescueTime records your action so it works automatically on weekends, for instance. Working Software Download
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes in that which You make of the data and how you use that information to influence your behavior. Changing behavior is tough, but getting rich insights doesn’t have to be.
Among the manners RescueTime makes it easy to understand how To interpret all of the data that it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily score, shown as a percent, comes in calculating the percent of time spent on very productive, effective, neutral, unproductive, and very unproductive tasks. To be clear, nobody is advocating you aim to get a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog article describing the productivity Score notes that the score is 67 percent, and the average is 79 percent. The majority of people want to do some job that isn’t considered”very productive” throughout their day. The entire point of using RescueTime is to help you figure out how to focus on productive and very productive tasks if you will need to and perhaps save less productive tasks for times when your ability to focus was waning anyway.
Jobs that are less productive are not exactly the Exact Same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a straightforward and smart attribute for controlling behaviour, like getting sucked into deflecting websites, too. A feature named FocusTime, when enabled, blocks your ability to access sites for a time period you specify. It takes a little setting up and personalization, but after it’s ready to deploy, it is quite powerful. For example, let us say you wish to finish a record, and to make progress on it, you need to focus hardcore for the next 30 minutes. Switch on FocusTime, and it can block you from taking a look posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or whatever other websites and activities you deem deflecting.
The RescueTime mobile program has a setting which will Automatically silence your phone you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you can set up other automation with the support of third party services IFTTTFree at iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence other distractions. For example, you may create a rule using IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”If I empower FocusTime, then automatically set my Slack status to busy.”
RescueTime also Provides you the Choice Idle moment. Whenever RescueTime finds that the computer was idle for many minutes in a row, it pops up a dialog asking if you were at a meeting, on the telephone, taking break, etc, and lets you classify the idle time accordingly.
Pros of RescueTime
Here is a Number of the advantages of using RescueTime Over other solutions. Working Software Download
At its heart, RescueTime does one thing — monitor time. It is not super special if you look at it that way. Technically, you could do some of those dozens of programs that are free or that using a spreadsheet on the internet.
But RescueTime’s feature set is special due to The way that it tracks time and exactly what it does with the information (aka, one you’ll really use).
RescueTime watches that windows have Activity, looks at instances, and the window title the action in this window. It’s constantly running in the background watching.
100% Automated tracking, unobtrustive makes RescueTime worthwhile. There is no friction or barrier to monitoring time.
Since RescueTime’s monitoring feature solves that Problem, you will have data that is complete, correct & useful.
RescueTime’s other features focus on producing their Core attribute. Like time-tracking & billing for 15, they do not try to include on features that are complementary. They do not try to enter any side businesses.
They do have Attribute in an intriguing way. The Get Focused! Feature blocks deflecting sites and/or programs when selected from running.
They have alerts and aims that allow you to pick What when X happens, you want to happen — and RescueTime will do this based on which it is monitoring.
I love how RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Rather than having to search and add it in 100% manually, then you select a time interval that is unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can customize the buttons to make logging Offline time quick and simple.
It is a minimalist feature set — but that is exactly Making it great. It’s well-done, straightforward and easy.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime provides two tiers of service: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 per month or $72 per year). Firms or organizations that want to utilize RescueTime across a bunch of people pay the exact same rate as Premium subscribers.
RescueTime Lite offers Monitored his or her time. The program monitors which websites and applications you use, and also how much time spent in or on each of these. You may categorize every program and site you are using on a Productive/Unproductive scale, and RescueTime creates a couple of basic reports demonstrating how you spend your own time. Lite members can place weekly objectives, such as”spend hours each week on productive jobs and fewer than Y moments on faulty products.” It’s possible to get a report email. For reports, you’re limited to a history.
Paying subscribers get everything in the Lite plan, Plus features and reports, including an infinite history. Premium also comes with alerts you can enable for when you reach on daily goals. You can more accurately log time spent away from the computer, noting whether you were in a meeting, on a telephone call, or simply out to dinner. There is a Get Focused alternative, which lets you block deflecting websites for a period of time you place. Working Software Download
Comparing RescueTime’s cost to that of other programs Needs an open mind as few apps do exactly what RescueTime does. Qbserve is one and it costs a flat fee of $40.
We can look at more Apps for freelancers who include tools for bills. HarvestFree in Harvest is a example. At $12 per individual a month for Premium, it costs over RescueTime, but it’s a very clear return on investment because it helps ensure more accurate billing. How you’ll translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is much less clear.
Toggl Popular among freelancers, costs $9 a month, and it also provides you tools for tracking time spent on projects with the end aim of charging clients. Toggl does not include its own invoicing tools, but it has integration options for linking with other invoicing services.
A Couple of apps are nearer to RescueTime in what they have to Provide, for example Slife, even though they have a tendency to have fewer features even if they are free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It’s free to use.
And if you are saved by the reporting/advanced features just 1 hour each month then it is paid for itself even if you are simply earning US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment that makes sense.
A common problem with monitoring apps of all types is That they have to be on. The”always on” feature can lead to performance problems on notebooks & desktop computers. It can cause battery issues .
But in my experience, RescueTime induces neither. It’s running from startup on my Nexus 5x phone, my Windows PC, along with my Macbook Pro. I have never monitored any functionality or battery problems to the app.
It’s lightweight and well-built.
I enjoy the fact that the mobile app doesn’t demand Heaps of ridiculous permissions. It demands access but does not attempt to track emails, contacts, location, or any of those privacy violating permissions apps request.
It’s quick to set up and syncs using an online dashboard. It crunches the information if you’re on the Premium plan or by next day to the program that is free, and pulls in data from all sources in precisely the time.
What’s the point of information if you can’t interpret it ? Working Software Download
RescueTime’s accounts solves this problem — and in Ways is the entire point of working with the app.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses vibrant bar and Pie charts to show exactly what you are (and are not) doing.
You can Choose to receive reports every day, Week or even month.
And on Top of That, you can dig deep to the Reporting with numerous filters and overlays to find your customs out.
It to see the actual amount of Time that each task happens.
When I trying to find a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time monitored to Instant Messages and Gchats was astounding. It changed processes not just for me, but also my job managers.
Now I’m on my own with no employees — I can see the time I devote to jobs that matter. I can build my entire day .
And Simply to reiterate Built-in to the software. The Dashboard is on my default — and even reports that are advanced are pre-built.
It’s all seamless, fast and powerful so that you Aren’t ironically wasting time.
One of the selling points of RescueTime is their characteristic set minimalism. They do one thing and they do it well.
That said — most people using their merchandise Have time-based software requirements. Whether it’s billing project management, team time tracking or anything else — your time demands don’t cease with measuring, monitoring and categorization.
To resolve that Issue, RescueTime’s software Integrates with a huge assortment of applications. They’ve an open API and integrations with shared software.
Whether you are a freelancer attempting to integrate Time tracking into invoicing applications like FreshBooks or even a job manager that needs to collate staff member’s time, RescueTime will likely integrate with it.
Disadvantages of RescueTime
Like any applications RescueTime is neither Nor is it the best fit for everyone. Here is some disadvantages that I’ve noticed through the years. Working Software Download
Default Get Focused! Categories
Generally, RescueTime’s categories good. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for most people. And for tracking, RescueTime’s categories are quick & easy to fix.
But RescueTime’s categories News, deflecting sites and research sites’ subdomains.
I can’t use the Get Focused! Performance for almost any Task that needs research (aka visiting a lot of different sites ).
The time that I need smart obstructing Performance is when I am doing research for a post
There is a fine line between which really is effective and When I am researching, this is distracting. It would be good to use RescueTime, but the classes aren’t accurate enough for it to operate.
The root problem is that the Block Sites function Is unavailable in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I can only add sites to unblock.
And when I’m visiting several dozen blocked websites — Manually adding them becomes the time wasting.
If You’re Looking for an app that will block Specific deflecting sites — RescueTime is not it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management software) Heightens the bias towards efficiency .
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours Every Day, Every day with focus that is ideal — you are doing the wrong thing.
The most important factor in time direction is to Work on the ideal things — the core 20% of time input that will generate 80% of your outcomes.
And that. RescueTime Can not fix that problem.
In fact, in some ways, RescueTime can damage your Efforts by pushing you towards better doing over approach, planning and research.
If effectiveness is your heart issue, then RescueTime is not for you. It will only make matters worse.
I’d recommend reading a few of them books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me personally. It is not for everyone and has pitfalls and some feature quirks.
Nevertheless, the best thing it is provided is perspective. It’s easy to think that you”work a ton” or are”not addicted to a phone” or”invest so much time writing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
However, the information doesn’t lie. And using RescueTime to Get precise time data onto your digital time will be able to help you literally rescue your time and put your own life in perspective. Working Software Download
