RescueTime has been part of my life For at least 6 years, but I have never sat down to write a RescueTime inspection until a few months ago. Time Pc

After all — if you are paid hourly or not, Your time is the only resource that is non-renewable. If you are going to manage anything, it should be your time.
Since nearly all of my priorities are on A pc — time management applications (ie, RescueTime) is a core part of that.

RescueTime is a time management & Productivity software company founded in 2008. The RescueTime program runs in the background of your apparatus automatically categorizing your own activity, measuring and tracking.

Rescuing Your Time
RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the to reiterate Feel that it helps your skills improve. It gathers data about the programs and websites you use, and then creates reports based on that info.
You create an account and install a to Begin Desktop app in your own personal computer (s) and optionally a cell program on Android devices. There’s no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the information it needs to carry out its function. Those apps quietly and invisibly monitor which programs you use and which sites you visit, as well as the amount of time spent on them.
The hard nut to crack is how to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you have to customize your accounts from the RescueTime website and inform the app more about what you believe productive versus unproductive activity. The further you fine-tune it to your specific conditions, the better your results. As an example, somebody who works in the financing industry may classify reading financial news on web sites including MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that is an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize site and each program on a 5-point Scale of quite productive, effective, neutral, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive. You can even categorize activity into work categorizes. By way of example, I record Google Docs as very productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, which will be a subcategory of Layout and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I am trying to work, and I’ve categorized it as such.
From the desktop program, there is a simple set of controls That lets you pause RescueTime for a quarter hour, one hour, or till tomorrow, giving you easy access to shifting the app off for days or breaks when you wrap up early.
When faced with RescueTime’s proposal –We will track Everything you do and provide you insights about your customs! –some people may, justifiably, be worried about their privacy and the security of information on their hardware. Should you use sensitive info on the internet or store sensitive information in your computers and mobile devices, you are going to want to read RescueTime’s privacy and safety statements carefully.
If your concerns are somewhat more relaxed and You Just Don’t Want RescueTime monitoring you on the weekend, so you have control over the days and times the app monitors your behavior. You can easily set it to just watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever schedule suits you.
I’ve used RescueTime for years, and that I don’t check my Daily, productivity reports. I love to let the service run in the background so that when I really do want to get a better picture of how I have been spending my own time, a fantastic quantity of information is awaiting me.
While I do go through the reports, however, they are Magnificent. I really like the variety, providing you get multiple ways of knowing your productivity and customs, from bar charts and pie graphs that show lump sums of action, to line items of applications you used.
1 simple but powerful piece of information RescueTime Provides is an analysis of when during the day you are inclined to be the most productive. I wasn’t surprised to observe that my mind peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits pretty well with what I know about my customs. If you have never analyzed your productivity, however, that might be a beneficial revelation for you, one which may help you schedule your times more .
The more time you use RescueTime Premium, the more applicable the Data becomes, because you can see your data by day, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, you can toggle which times and days RescueTime records your activity so that it turns off automatically on weekends, for example. Time Pc
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes in that which You make of this information and how you use that information to affect your own behavior. Changing behaviour is tough, but getting rich insights does not need to be.
Among those ways RescueTime makes it Simple to understand how To interpret all the data that it collects is with a Productivity Pulse score. This daily evaluation, shown as a percent, comes from calculating the percentage of time spent on very productive, productive, impartial, unproductive, and very wasteful jobs. To be clear, nobody is advocating you target to get a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog post explaining the productivity Score notes that the score is 67 percent, and the in-house average is 79 percent. Most people need to do some job which is not considered”very productive” during daily. The entire point of using RescueTime will be to help you work out how to focus on productive and incredibly productive tasks if you will need to and perhaps save less productive tasks for times as soon as your ability to focus was waning anyway.
Less productive jobs are not the Exact Same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a smart and straightforward attribute for curbing behavior, such as getting sucked into websites that are distracting , too. A feature called FocusTime, when enabled, blocks your ability to access. It takes a little setting up and personalization, but once it’s ready to set up, it is quite powerful. For example, let us say you want to to finish a report, and also to make progress on it, you need to focus hardcore for the next 30 minutes. Switch FocusTime, and it can prevent you from looking at email, posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or whatever other websites and actions you deem distracting.
The RescueTime mobile program has a setting which will Automatically silence your phone you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you can set up other automation with the help of third-party services IFTTTFree at iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence other distractions. By way of instance, you may create a rule with IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”When I enable FocusTime, then automatically set my Slack standing to busy.”
RescueTime also gives you the Choice Idle moment. Any time RescueTime finds that the computer was idle for many minutes in a row, it pops up a dialog asking if you’re in a meeting, on the telephone, taking break, etc, and permits you to categorize the idle time accordingly.
Pros of RescueTime
Here’s a Number of the advantages of utilizing RescueTime Over solutions. Time Pc
At its core, RescueTime does something — monitor time. When you look at it that way, it’s not super unique. Technically, you can do any of the dozens of free apps or this with a spreadsheet on the internet.
But RescueTime’s attribute set is unique because of The way that it tracks time and exactly what it does with the information (aka, you you’ll really use).
RescueTime watches which windows have Action, looks at instances, and the window name the action in that window. It’s always running in the background always watching.
Unobtrustive, Automated tracking that is 100% makes RescueTime worthwhile. There is no friction or hurdle to tracking time.
Since RescueTime’s monitoring feature solves that Problem, you’ll have data that’s complete, correct & useful.
RescueTime’s other features focus on making their Core feature. Like time-tracking & charging for 15, they don’t attempt to include on features that are complementary. They do not try to enter any side companies.
They do have Feature in an intriguing manner. The Get Focused! When selected from running feature blocks programs.
They have alarms and goals that Permit You to decide What you want to occur when X happens — and RescueTime can do that based on what it is monitoring.
I also love how RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Instead of being required to search and put in it in 100% manually, you pick a time interval that is unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can also customize the buttons to create logging Offline time quick and simple.
It is a minimalist feature set — but that’s precisely What makes it great. It is simple, easy and well-done.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime provides two tiers of support: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 a month or $72 per year). Organizations or businesses that want to use RescueTime across a bunch of people pay the exact same rate.
RescueTime Lite offers lots for someone who has never Monitored her or his time before. The program monitors which sites and applications you use, and also how long you spend in or on every one of these. You may categorize each app and website you are using on a Productive/Unproductive scale, also RescueTime creates a few primary reports showing the best way to spend your time. Lite members can set weekly goals, such as”spend X hours each week on productive jobs and fewer than Y moments on unproductive items.” It’s possible to find a weekly report email to you. For reports, you’re limited to a history, however.
Paying subscribers get everything from the Lite program that is free, Plus reports and extra features, such as an history. Premium comes with alarms you can empower for if you hit daily goals. You can more correctly log time spent away from the computer, noting whether you’re in a meeting, on a telephone call, or simply out to dinner. Assessing RescueTime’s price to that of other programs Requires an open mind as few apps do exactly what RescueTime does. Qbserve is one and it charges a level fee of $40.
We could look at more Programs for freelancers that typically include tools for bills. HarvestFree at Harvest is an adequate example. At $12 per person a month for Premium, it costs more than RescueTime, but it’s a clear return on investment because it helps ensure more accurate billing. How you’ll translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is much less clear.
Toggl Popular among salespeople, prices $9 per month, and in addition, it provides you tools for tracking time spent on projects with the usual end aim of billing customers. It has many integration options for connecting with other invoicing services, although toggl does not include its own invoicing tools.
A few programs are closer to RescueTime in what they have to Provide, such as Slife, although they tend to have fewer features even if they’re free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is free to use.
And if you are saved by the features just One hour each month it’s paid for itself even if you are simply making US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment which makes sense.
A problem with tracking apps of all kinds is That they must be on. The”always on” feature can cause performance issues on notebooks & desktop computers. Battery issues can be caused by it .
But in my experience, RescueTime induces neither. It’s running in my Windows PC, my Macbook Pro, and my Nexus 5x phone from startup. I’ve never tracked any functionality or battery issues.
It is lightweight and well-built.
I enjoy the fact that the app doesn’t demand Heaps of permissions that are ridiculous. It requires access to use data, but does not try to monitor emails, contacts, location, or some of the privacy violating permissions programs request.
It’s quick to set up and syncs with an internet dashboard. It crunches the data if you are on the Premium program or from next day to the free plan, and pulls in data from all sources at the period.
What is the purpose of data if it can’t be interpreted by you Or place it to use? Time Pc
RescueTime’s accounts solves this problem — and in Ways is the point of using the app over a spreadsheet.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses bar and Pie charts to show exactly what you are (and aren’t ) doing.
You can opt to receive reports every day, Week or month.
And on Top of That, you can dig deep to the Reporting with numerous filters and overlays to find out your customs.
It to determine the actual amount of Time that each job happens.
When I trying to find a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time monitored to Gchats and Instant Messages was astonishing. It changed my job supervisors , but also processes not only for me personally.
Now I’m on my own I will see the exact time I devote to tasks that matter. I can build my day .
And Simply to reiterate the reports are Built-in to the computer software. The Dashboard is really on my default — and reports that are innovative are pre-built.
It’s all seamless, quick and effective so that you While analyzing your time are currently wasting time.
One of the Major selling points of RescueTime is their characteristic set minimalism. They do something and they do it well.
That said all people using their product Have software needs. When it’s billing, project management, team time tracking or something your time needs usually don’t cease with tracking, measuring and categorization.
To solve that problem, RescueTime’s applications Integrates with a massive range of applications. They have direct integrations and an API with applications that is shared.
Whether you are Time monitoring into a job manager that needs to collate team member’s time or invoicing applications like FreshBooks, RescueTime will integrate with it.
Disadvantages of RescueTime
Like any software however — RescueTime is Nor can it be the best fit for everybody. Here’s some pitfalls that I’ve noticed through time. Time Pc
Default Get Focused! Categories
In general, RescueTime’s classes good. Sites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for most people. And for overall tracking, RescueTime’s classes are quick & simple to fix.
However, RescueTime’s categories can be off with general News, research websites and sites’ subdomains.
I can not use the Get Focused! Functionality for almost any Task which needs research (aka visiting a lot of different sites ).
Paradoxically, the time I need smart obstructing Functionality is when I’m doing research for a post
There’s a fine line between which is productive and This really is distracting when I’m researching. It would be great to use RescueTime, but the categories are not true enough for it to work.
The root issue is the Block Sites work Is not available in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I can only add sites to unblock.
And if I am visiting several sites were blocked by dozen — Adding them becomes the time wasting.
If You’re Looking for an app that will block Specific sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management software) Heightens the bias towards efficiency over effectiveness.
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours per day, Daily with focus that is perfect — you are doing the thing that is wrong.
The most important factor in time management is to Work on the things .
And that. RescueTime Can not fix that issue.
Actually, in certain ways, RescueTime can damage your By pushing you towards doing over research approach and planning Attempts.
If efficacy is your heart issue, then RescueTime isn’t for you. It will only make matters worse.
I’d recommend reading a few of these books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me personally. It’s not for everyone and has some attribute quirks and disadvantages.
That said, the best thing it is supplied is perspective. It’s easy to believe you”work a ton” or are”not addicted to a telephone” or”spend so much time composing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
But the information does not lie. And utilizing RescueTime to Get precise time data on your digital time will be able to assist you put your own life and literally conserve your time. Time Pc
