RescueTime has been a part of my life that is working For at least 6 decades, but I’ve never sat down to write a RescueTime review until only a couple of months ago. Spot Light Columbia River Fire & Rescue Trade Time Abuse
A few months ago marked my first year of self-employment. I took the time to re-evaluate all of my tools and working procedures to make sure I had a solid time equilibrium among all of my priorities.
After all — if You’re paid hourly or not, Your time is the sole resource that is non-renewable. It ought to be your time if you’re going to manage anything.
Since almost all my specialist priorities are on A computer — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core component of that.
Here is my RescueTime review with pros use Cases and following steps according to my experience.
What Is RescueTime?
RescueTime is a time management & Productivity software company founded in 2008. The RescueTime app runs in the background of your apparatus measuring monitoring and automatically categorizing your activity.
RescueTime is a free program with a premium update That allows more specific reporting and attributes like time input that is offline . It offers a reporting dash with your information chopped, diced and sorted into useful charts to help you manage your time.
The program is based on Peter Drucker’s (the famous Management advisor ) maxim that”what gets measured, gets managed.”
RescueTime takes the tracking of time And makes it painless and automatic you truly track your own time so that you may be conscious of time use.
Nevertheless, there are dozens and dozens of Productivity & time management programs on the Internet. What are the actual pros & cons of RescueTime? Here’s what I have noticed through time.

Rescuing Your Period
RescumeTime is a productivity tool at the to reiterate Feel that it helps you enhance your skills. It gathers data about the apps and sites you use, and then generates reports based on that info.
You create an account and set up a to get started Desktop app on your computer(s) and optionally a cell program on Android devices. There is no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from collecting the data it needs to perform its function. Those apps quietly and invisibly monitor which programs you use and which websites you visit, in addition to the amount of time spent on these.
The tough nut to crack is the Way to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you have to customize your account from the RescueTime website and inform the program more about what you believe productive versus unproductive activity. The more you fine-tune it to your particular circumstances, the better your results. As an instance, somebody who works in the finances industry may classify reading financial news on sites such as MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that is an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize website and every app on a 5-point Scale of quite effective, productive, neutral, dependable, and incredibly unproductive. You could even categorize activity into perform categorizes. For instance, I list Google Docs as quite productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, which is a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I am trying to function, and I’ve categorized it .
From the desktop app, there’s a simple set of controllers That lets you pause RescueTime for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or until tomorrow, providing you easy access to shifting the app off for days or breaks when you wrap up early.
When confronted with RescueTime’s proposal –We’ll track Everything you do and provide you insights about your habits! –some people might, justifiably, worry about their privacy and the safety of information on their hardware. If you use sensitive info on the internet or keep sensitive information on your computers and mobile devices, you’ll want to browse RescueTime’s privacy and security statements closely.
If your concerns are more relaxed and you simply don’t Want RescueTime tracking you on the weekend, you’ve got control over the times and days the app monitors your behavior. You can easily set it to only watch your activity from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever program suits you.
I’ve used RescueTime for decades, and that I don’t check my Every day, productivity reports. I love to let the service run in the background so that when I do want to find a better image of how I have been spending my time, a good quantity of information is waiting for me.
When I do go through the reports, however, they are Magnificent. I love the variety, giving you get numerous ways of understanding your productivity and habits, from bar charts and pie charts that show lump sums of activity, to line items of software you employed.
One simple but powerful piece of information RescueTime Provides is an investigation of when during the daytime you tend to be the most successful. I wasn’t surprised to see that my brain peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits pretty well with everything I know about my customs. If you have never analyzed your productivity, however, that may be a beneficial revelation for you, one that may help you schedule your times more .
The longer you use RescueTime Premium, the more applicable the Data becomes, because you can view your data daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, you can toggle that days and times RescueTime records your activity so that it works automatically on weekends, for example. Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes in that which You make of this data and the way you use that data to influence your behavior. Changing behavior is hard, but getting rich insights does not need to be.
One of those ways RescueTime makes it Simple to understand how To interpret all of the data it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily evaluation, shown as a percentage, comes in calculating the percent of time spent very productive, effective, neutral, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive tasks. To be clear, nobody is advocating you aim for a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog article describing the productivity Score notes that the score is 67 percent, and the on site average is 79 percent. The majority of people want to do some job which is not considered”very productive” throughout daily. The entire purpose of using RescueTime will be to help you figure out how to focus on productive and very productive tasks if you need to and possibly save less productive tasks for times as soon as your ability to focus was waning anyway.
Less productive tasks are not exactly the Exact Same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a straightforward and smart attribute for controlling behaviour, like getting sucked into sites , also. A feature called FocusTime, when enabled, blocks your ability to access. It takes a little setting up and personalization, but once it’s ready to deploy, it is quite powerful. As an example, let us say you want to to finish a record, and to make progress on it, you need to concentrate hardcore for the next thirty minutes. Switch FocusTime, and it can block you from looking at email, posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or other websites and actions you deem deflecting.
The RescueTime mobile app has Mechanically silence your phone whenever you enable FocusTime. Likewise, you may set up other automation with the help of third-party services IFTTTFree at iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence additional distractions. For instance, you may make a rule with IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”If I empower FocusTime, then mechanically set my Slack status to active.”
RescueTime also Provides you the Choice to log time computer Idle moment. Any time RescueTime finds that the computer was idle for many minutes in a row, so it pops up a dialogue asking if you were at a meeting, on the telephone, taking rest, and so on, and lets you categorize the idle time accordingly.
Advantages of RescueTime
Here’s some of the advantages of using RescueTime Over solutions. Spot Light Columbia River Fire & Rescue Trade Time Abuse
At its heart, RescueTime does something — monitor time. It is not super special if you look at it like this. Technically, you could do that using a spreadsheet or some of the dozens of apps that are free online.
But RescueTime’s attribute set How it monitors time and exactly what it does with all the data (aka, you you’ll actually use).
RescueTime watches that windows have Activity, looks at the window title, and times the action in that window. It is always running in the background — always watching.
Unobtrustive makes RescueTime rewarding. There is not any friction or hurdle to tracking time.
Since RescueTime’s tracking feature simplifies that Problem, you will have data that’s complete, correct & useful.
RescueTime’s other features focus on making their Core feature. Like time-tracking & charging for 15, they don’t attempt to include on features that are complementary. They don’t attempt to enter any side companies.
They do have Feature in an interesting way. The Get Focused! Feature blocks programs.
They have alerts and aims that allow you to pick What you want to happen when X occurs — and RescueTime will do that based on what it’s monitoring.
I love how RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Instead of having to search and add it in 100% manually, you pick a time interval that’s unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can customize the buttons to make logging Offline time simple and quick.
It is a feature set — but that Making it great. It’s easy, straightforward and well-done.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime offers two tiers of service: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 a month or $72 per year). Firms or organizations that want to use RescueTime across a bunch of individuals pay the exact same speed.
RescueTime Lite offers Tracked her or his time. The program monitors which websites and programs you use, and how long spent in or on each of them. You may categorize every app and website you use on a Productive/Unproductive scale, and RescueTime creates a couple of primary reports showing the best way to spend your own time. Lite members can place weekly objectives, such as”spend hours per week on productive tasks and fewer than Y minutes on faulty products.” You can find a weekly report email to you. For reports, you’re limited to some history, nevertheless.
Subscribers get everything from the Lite plan that is free, Plus reports and extra features, such as an unlimited report history. Premium comes with alarms you can enable for when you reach on daily goals. You can more accurately log time spent away from the computer, noting if you were in a meeting, on a phone call, or simply out to lunch. Additionally, there is a Get Focused option, which lets you block websites that are deflecting for a time period you place. Spot Light Columbia River Fire & Rescue Trade Time Abuse
Assessing RescueTime’s price to that of other programs Needs an open mind because programs do precisely what RescueTime does. Qbserve is among the programs you may find, and it charges a flat fee of $40.
We could look at more traditional time-tracking Apps for freelancers that typically include tools for bills. HarvestFree in Harvest is an adequate example. At $12 per individual per month for Premium, it costs more than RescueTime, but it’s a very clear return on investment since it helps ensure more accurate charging. How you will interpret RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is not as clear.
Toggl Popular among salespeople, prices $9 per month, and it provides you tools for monitoring time spent on jobs with the typical end aim of charging customers. It has integration options for connecting with additional invoicing services, although toggl does not include its own invoicing tools.
A Couple of programs are closer to RescueTime in what they have to Offer, such as Slife, although they have a tendency to have fewer attributes even if they’re free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is free to use.
And when the features save you only One hour per month it is paid for itself even if you are earning US minimum wage.
A common problem with monitoring apps of all types is That they must be on. The”always on” attribute can lead to performance issues on notebooks & desktop computers. Battery issues can be caused by it .
But in my experience, RescueTime induces neither. It’s running on also my Nexus 5x mobile phone, my Windows PC, and my Macbook Pro. I’ve never tracked any battery or functionality issues to the program.
It is well-built and lightweight.
I enjoy the fact that the app doesn’t demand Heaps of permissions that are ridiculous. It requires access but doesn’t attempt to monitor contacts location, emails, or some of those privacy that is typical violating other programs that are permissions request.
It’s quick to install and syncs using an online dashboard. It crunches the information if you’re on the Premium program or from next day on the free program, and pulls in the period.
What is the purpose of data if it can’t be interpreted by you ? Spot Light Columbia River Fire & Rescue Trade Time Abuse
RescueTime’s accounts solves this issue — and in Ways is the point of using the app above a spreadsheet.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses bar graphs and Pie graphs to show exactly what you are (and are not) doing.
You can Choose to receive emails reports every day, Week or even month.
And on Top of That, you can dig to the Reporting with numerous filters and overlays to find your habits out.
It to see the actual amount of Time that each task takes.
When I working for a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time tracked to Instant Messages and Gchats was astonishing. It changed processes not only for me personally, but also my project managers.
Now I’m on my own — I will see the time I devote to jobs that matter. I am able to build my day around those.
And Simply to reiterate the reports are Built-in into the software. The Dashboard is really on my default — as well as reports are pre-built.
It’s all powerful, seamless and fast so that you When assessing your time Are not ironically wasting time.
One of the selling points of RescueTime is their characteristic set minimalism. They do one thing and they do it well.
That said all people using their product Have software requirements. When it’s charging, project management, team time monitoring or something your own time demands don’t stop with measuring, tracking and categorization.
To resolve that problem, RescueTime’s applications Integrates with a massive range of software. They’ve integrations and an open API with software that is common.
Whether you are a freelancer attempting to incorporate Time tracking into invoicing applications like FreshBooks or even a job manager that needs to collate staff member’s time, RescueTime will integrate with it.
Cons of RescueTime
Like any software however — RescueTime is neither Perfect nor can it be the best fit for everybody. Here is some disadvantages that I’ve noticed through time. Spot Light Columbia River Fire & Rescue Trade Time Abuse
Default Get Focused! Groups
Generally, RescueTime’s classes good. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for most people. And for monitoring, RescueTime’s classes are quick & easy to repair.
But RescueTime’s categories News, distracting sites and research websites’ subdomains.
I can’t use the Get Focused! Performance for almost any Task which requires research (aka visiting a lot of different sites ).
The time that I need smart blocking Functionality is when I am doing research for a post
There’s a fine line between which really is productive and When I am researching, this is distracting. It would be good to use RescueTime, but the classes aren’t accurate enough for it to work.
The Main issue is that the Block Sites work Is unavailable in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I can add sites to unblock.
And when I’m visiting several websites were blocked by dozen — Adding them becomes the time wasting.
If you are looking for an program that will block just Specific deflecting sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management software) Heightens the bias towards efficiency .
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours per day, Every day with focus — you are doing the thing that is wrong.
The most important Element in time direction is to Work on the things that are right .
And that. RescueTime Can’t fix that issue.
In fact, in certain ways, RescueTime can hurt your By pushing you towards better efficient doing over research, approach and planning efforts.
If effectiveness is your core issue RescueTime is not for you. It’ll only make matters worse.
Instead, I’d recommend reading a few of them books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me. It’s not for everybody and has pitfalls and some attribute quirks.
Nevertheless, the best thing it’s provided is perspective. It’s easy to think that you just”work a ton” or are”not hooked on your telephone” or”spend as much time writing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
However, the information does not lie. And using RescueTime to Get precise time data on your digital time will be able to assist you place your life and literally rescue your own time. Spot Light Columbia River Fire & Rescue Trade Time Abuse
