After all — whether You’re paid Your time is the sole non-renewable resource. It should be your time, if you’re going to handle anything.
Since nearly all my specialist priorities are on A computer — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core component of that.
Here’s my RescueTime review with pros, cons, utilize Cases and following steps based on my experience.
What Is RescueTime?
RescueTime is a time direction & Productivity software firm founded in 2008. The RescueTime program runs in the background of your apparatus measuring monitoring and categorizing your own activity.
RescueTime is a free app with a premium update That allows features and more specific reporting like offline time inputsignal. It offers a reporting dash with your information chopped, diced and sorted into useful graphs to assist you manage your own time.
The app relies on Peter Drucker’s (the famous Management consultant) maxim that”what gets measured, gets managed.”
RescueTime takes time’s tracking So you actually track your own time so that and makes it automatic and painless .

Rescuing Your Time
RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the, to reiterate Sense that it helps you enhance your time-management abilities. It gathers data about the apps and sites you use, and then generates reports based on that info.
To Begin, you install a and create an account Desktop app in your own personal computer (s) and a cell app on Android apparatus ) There’s no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the data it needs to carry out its purpose. Those apps quietly and invisibly monitor which apps you use and which websites you visit, in addition to the quantity of time you spend on them.
The hard nut to crack is how to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you have to customize your account from the RescueTime site and inform the app more about what you consider productive versus unproductive activity. The further you fine-tune it to your particular conditions, the greater your results. For example, someone who works in the financing industry might classify reading financial news on web sites including MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that is an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize every program and site on a 5-point Scale of quite effective, productive, neutral, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive. You could even categorize activity into perform categorizes. For example, I list Google Docs as very productive, and I categorized it as Writing, which will be a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I’m trying to function, and I have categorized it .
From the desktop program, there is an easy set of controls That lets you pause RescueTime for a quarter hour, 1 hour, or until tomorrow, giving you easy access to shifting the program off for days or breaks when you wrap up early.
When faced with RescueTime’s proposal –We will monitor Everything you do and give you insights about your customs! –some people might, justifiably, be worried about their privacy and the security of information on their own hardware. If you use sensitive information on the internet or store sensitive information in your own computers and mobile devices, you’ll want to read RescueTime’s privacy and safety statements closely.
If your concerns are somewhat more relaxed and You Just Don’t Want RescueTime monitoring you on the weekend, you’ve got control over the days and times the app monitors your behavior. It is simple to set it to just watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever schedule suits you.
I’ve used RescueTime for decades, and that I don’t check my Productivity reports. I like to allow the service run in the background so that when I do want to find a better image of how I’ve been spending my own time, a good quantity of information is waiting for me.
When I do go through the reports, however, they’re Magnificent. I really like the variety, giving you get multiple ways of understanding your productivity and habits, from bar graphs and pie graphs that reveal lump amounts of activity, to line things of applications you employed.
One simple but effective piece of information RescueTime Supplies is an investigation of when during the day you are inclined to be the most productive. I was not surprised to observe that my mind peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits fairly well with everything I understand about my customs. If you have never analyzed your productivity, nevertheless, that might be a useful revelation for you, one that might help you schedule your days more productively.
The more time you use RescueTime Premium, the more useful the Data becomes, because you may see your data daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, you can toggle that times and days RescueTime records your activity so it turns off automatically on weekends, for example. Rescuetime Pc
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes from that which You make of this information and the way you use that data to affect your behavior. Changing behaviour is hard, but getting rich insights doesn’t have to be.
One of the manners RescueTime makes it Simple to understand how To interpret all the information it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily evaluation, shown as a percentage, comes in calculating the percent of time spent on very productive, productive, impartial, unproductive, and very unproductive tasks. To be clear, no one is advocating you aim to get a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog article describing the productivity Score notes that the typical score is 67 percent, and the average is 79 percent. The majority of people need to do some job which is not considered”very productive” throughout daily. The whole point of using RescueTime will be to help you figure out how to concentrate on productive and very productive tasks when you need to and perhaps save productive activities for times as soon as your ability to concentrate has been waning anyway.
Jobs are not exactly the same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a simple and smart attribute for curbing behavior, such as getting sucked into sites . A feature called FocusTime, when empowered, blocks your ability to access. It takes a little setting up and customization, but it is quite effective, after it is ready to deploy. As an example, let us say you wish to finish a record, and to make progress on it, you really need to focus hardcore for the next thirty minutes. It may block you from looking posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or other sites and activities, and switch on FocusTime you deem deflecting.
The RescueTime mobile program has Mechanically silence your phone whenever you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you can set up other automation with the help of third-party services IFTTTFree at iTunes Store and Zapier to obstruct or silence other distractions. By way of instance, you may make a rule with IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that says,”When I empower FocusTime, then automatically set my Slack standing to active.”
RescueTime also Provides you the Choice to log time computer Idle time. Whenever RescueTime notices the computer was idle for many minutes at a row, it pops up a dialogue asking if you were in a meeting, on the phone, taking rest, and so on, and permits you to classify the idle time accordingly.
Pros of RescueTime
Here is some of the advantages of using RescueTime Over other solutions. Rescuetime Pc
At its core, RescueTime does something — track time. It’s not special if you look at it like this. Technically, you can do some of the dozens of apps that are free or that with a spreadsheet online.
But RescueTime’s feature set is unique because of How it monitors time and what it does with the information (aka, one you’ll really use).
RescueTime watches that windows now have Action, looks at instances, and the window name the action in this window. It is always running in the background always watching.
Unobtrustive, 100% Automated tracking makes RescueTime rewarding. There’s not any friction or barrier to tracking time.
Since RescueTime’s monitoring feature simplifies that Problem, you’ll have data that’s complete, correct & useful.
RescueTime’s other features focus on producing their Core attribute. They don’t attempt to include on features that are complementary like time-tracking & charging for freelancers. They do not attempt to enter any side companies.
They do have a few features Using the tracking Attribute in an interesting manner. By Way of Example, the Get Focused! From running when chosen feature blocks apps.
They have alerts and aims that allow you to pick What when X occurs, you want to happen — and RescueTime will do this based on what it is tracking.
I love RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Rather than being required to search and add it in 100% manually, you select a time period that is unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can even customize the buttons to create logging Offline time quick and simple.
It’s a feature but that Making it great. It’s simple, simple and well-done.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime provides two tiers of support: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 a month or $72 annually ). Organizations or Firms that are looking to use RescueTime across a bunch of individuals pay the exact same rate.
RescueTime Lite offers Tracked her or his period before. The program monitors which sites and applications you use, and also how long you spend on or in every one of them. You may categorize every program and site you use on a Productive/Unproductive scale, also RescueTime creates a couple of primary reports showing how you spend your own time. Lite members can place weekly goals, such as”spend X hours each week on productive tasks and fewer than Y minutes on faulty products.” You can find a report email. For reports, you are confined to a three-month history.
Paying subscribers get everything from the Lite plan, Plus extra features and reports, such as an infinite report history. Premium comes with alarms you can empower for when you reach daily goals. You can more accurately log time spent away from the computer, noting whether you were in a meeting, on a phone call, or simply out to lunch. There is a Get Focused alternative, which permits you to block websites that are distracting for a time period you set. Rescuetime Pc
Assessing RescueTime’s cost to that of other apps Requires an open mind because programs do exactly what RescueTime does. Qbserve is one and it costs a flat one-time fee of $40.
We could look at more traditional time-tracking Programs for freelancers that contain tools for creating invoices. HarvestFree at Harvest is a decent example. At $12 per individual per month for Premium, it costs more than RescueTime, but it has a very clear return on investment because it helps to ensure more accurate charging. How you will translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is not as clear.
Toggl Popular among freelancers, costs $9 per month, and in addition, it provides you tools for tracking time spent on jobs with the usual end goal of charging clients. It has several integration options for connecting with invoicing services, although toggl doesn’t include its own invoicing tools.
A few programs are nearer to RescueTime in what they have to Offer, for example Slife, even though they have a tendency to have fewer features even if they are free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It’s totally free to use.
And when the features save you just One hour each month it’s paid for itself even if you are earning US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment that makes sense.
A common problem with tracking apps of all types is That they have to be on. The”always on” feature can cause performance problems on laptops & desktop computers. Battery problems can be caused by it on mobile devices.
But in my own experience, RescueTime causes neither. It is running in also my Nexus 5x phone, my Windows PC, along with my Macbook Pro. I’ve never monitored any battery or performance problems.
It is well-built and lightweight.
I like the fact that the mobile app does not demand Dozens of permissions. It requires access but doesn’t attempt to track location, contacts, emails, or some of the privacy violating programs that are permissions ask for.
It is quick to set up and syncs using an internet dashboard. It crunches the information if you’re on the Premium program or by next day to the plan that is free, and pulls in the exact same period.
What is the purpose of data if you can not interpret it ? Rescuetime Pc
RescueTime’s reports solves that issue — and in Many ways is the entire point of working with the program.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses colorful bar charts and Pie graphs to reveal exactly what you are (and aren’t ) doing.
You can Choose to receive reports Daily, Week or month.
And best of all, you can dig deep to the Reporting with various filters and overlays to find your habits out.
It is really eye-opening to see the actual amount of Time that each job happens.
When I working for a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time monitored to Gchats and Instant Messages was astonishing. It altered my job supervisors , but also processes not only for me personally.
Now that I’m on my own — I can see the time that I devote to jobs that matter. I am able to build my day around those.
And just to reiterate the reports are Built-in into the software. The Dashboard is on my default — and even reports that are advanced are pre-built.
It’s all effective, seamless and fast so that you While analyzing your time aren’t ironically wasting time.
One of the selling points of RescueTime is their feature set minimalism. They do something and they do it well.
That said — most all people using their product Have time-based applications requirements. Whether it’s project management, billing, staff time monitoring or anything else — your time needs usually don’t cease with measuring tracking and categorization.
To resolve that problem, RescueTime’s software Integrates with a assortment of other applications. They’ve an open API and direct integrations with applications.
Whether you are Time monitoring into invoicing applications like FreshBooks or even a project manager that needs to collate staff member’s time, RescueTime will likely integrate with it.
Disadvantages of RescueTime
Like any applications though — RescueTime is Perfect nor can it be the ideal fit for everybody. Here is some pitfalls that I’ve noticed over the years. Rescuetime Pc
Default Get Focused! Categories
In general, RescueTime’s categories are fairly good. Sites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for many people. And for overall monitoring, RescueTime’s classes are quick & simple to fix.
However, RescueTime’s classes can be away with overall News, distracting sites and research sites’ subdomains.
I can’t use the Get Focused! Performance for almost any Task which requires research (aka visiting a lot of different websites).
The time I need smart blocking Performance is when I’m doing research for a post
There’s a fine line between this is effective and This is distracting when I’m researching. It’d be great to use RescueTime, but the categories aren’t true enough for it to operate.
The Main issue is the Block Sites function Is unavailable in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I am only able to add websites to unblock.
And when I am visiting several dozen blocked websites — Adding them quickly becomes the time wasting.
If you are looking for an app that will block only Specific deflecting sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management software) Heightens the prejudice towards efficiency over effectiveness.
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours Every Day, Every day with focus — you are still doing the incorrect thing.
The most important Element in time management is to Work on the things that are right .
And that. RescueTime Can’t fix that problem.
In some ways, Actually, RescueTime can damage your By pushing you towards doing over planning, research and strategy Attempts.
If efficacy is your heart issue RescueTime is not for you. It’ll only make things worse.
Instead, I’d recommend reading some of them books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me. It is not for everyone and has some feature quirks and pitfalls.
That said, the best thing is perspective. It’s easy to believe you”work a ton” or are”not addicted to your phone” or”invest as much time writing” or are”barely ever on Facebook.”
However, the data does not lie. And using RescueTime to Get accurate time data onto your digital time can help your own time is literally rescued by you and place your own life. Rescuetime Pc
