A Couple of months ago declared my first year of self-employment. I took the opportunity to of my resources and working processes to make sure I had a good time equilibrium among all of my own priorities.
After all — if you are paid hourly or not, Your time is the only resource that is non-renewable. It should be your time if you’re going to handle anything.
Since nearly all of my priorities are on A computer — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core component of that.
Here’s my RescueTime review with pros utilize Instances and following steps according to my experience.
What Is RescueTime?
RescueTime is a time direction & Productivity software company founded in 2008. The RescueTime program runs in the background of your devices measuring, tracking and automatically categorizing your own activity.
RescueTime is a free program with a premium update That enables more specific reporting and attributes like moment input. It delivers a reporting dash with your data chopped, diced and sorted into graphs that will assist you manage your own time.
The app is based on Peter Drucker’s (the famous Management consultant) maxim that”what gets measured, gets managed.”
RescueTime requires the manual monitoring of time That you truly track your own time so that and makes it automatic and painless .
That said, there are dozens and dozens of Improvement & time management programs on the Internet. What are the pros & cons of RescueTime? Here is what I’ve noticed through time.

Rescuing Your Period
RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the, to reiterate Feel that it helps your abilities improve. It gathers data about the apps and websites you use, then generates reports based on that info.
To get started, you install a and create an account Desktop program in your computer(s) and a cell app on Android devices. There is no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the information it needs to perform its function. Those programs quietly and invisibly monitor which apps you use and which sites you visit, in addition to the quantity of time spent on these.
The hard nut to crack is how to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you must customize your account from the RescueTime website and tell the program more about what you believe productive versus unproductive action. The further you fine-tune it to your particular conditions, the greater your results. As an example, someone who operates in the financing industry may classify reading financial news on web sites including MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that’s an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize website and each app on a 5-point Scale of quite productive, productive, impartial, unproductive, and very unproductive. You could also categorize activity into perform categorizes. For instance, I list Google Docs as very productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, and it is a subcategory of Layout and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is very distracting when I’m trying to function, and I have categorized it as such.
From the desktop program, there is a simple set of controllers That lets you pause RescueTime for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or till tomorrow, giving you easy access to shifting the program off for breaks or days when you wrap up early.
When confronted with RescueTime’s proposition–We will monitor Everything you do and give you insights about your customs! –some people might, justifiably, worry about their privacy and the safety of information on their hardware. Should you work with sensitive info on the internet or store sensitive information in your computers and mobile devices, you’ll want to read RescueTime’s privacy and safety statements carefully.
If your concerns are more relaxed and You Just Don’t Want RescueTime monitoring you on the weekend, so you have control over the times and days the app monitors your behaviour. You can easily set it to only watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever schedule suits you.
I’ve used RescueTime for years, and that I don’t check my Daily, productivity reports. I like to let the service run in the background so that when I really do want to find a better picture of how I’ve been spending my time, a good amount of information is awaiting me.
When I do go through the reports, however, they’re Magnificent. I love the variety, giving you get numerous ways of knowing your productivity and customs, from bar charts and pie graphs that show lump amounts of action, to line things of software you employed.
One simple but powerful piece of advice RescueTime Supplies is an analysis of when during the daytime you are inclined to be the most successful. I wasn’t surprised to observe that my brain peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that matches fairly well with everything I understand about my habits. If you have never analyzed your productivity, however, that might be a beneficial revelation for you, one which may help you schedule your days more productively.
The longer you use RescueTime Premium, the more useful the Data becomes, because you can see your data daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, you can toggle that times and days RescueTime records your action so it works automatically on weekends, for example. Rescuetime Free Download
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes in that which You make of the information and how you use that data to influence your own behavior. Changing behaviour is hard, but getting rich insights doesn’t need to be.
One of the manners RescueTime makes it easy to understand how To interpret all the data that it collects is with a Productivity Pulse score. This daily score, shown as a percentage, comes in calculating the percent of time spent on very productive, productive, impartial, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive tasks. To be clear, nobody is advocating you aim for a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog article describing the productivity Score notes that the score is 67 percent, and the on site average is 79 percent. Most people want to do some job that is not considered”very productive” during daily. The whole point of using RescueTime will be to help you figure out how to concentrate on productive and very productive tasks if you need to and possibly save productive tasks for times as soon as your ability to focus has been waning anyway.
Less productive tasks are not the same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a smart and simple attribute for curbing behavior that is unwanted, such as getting sucked into distracting websites, too. A feature called FocusTime, when enabled, blocks your ability to access. It requires a little setting up and personalization, but it’s quite powerful after it’s ready to deploy. For example, let’s say you wish to to finish a report, and also to make progress on it, you need to focus hardcore for the next 30 minutes. It can prevent you from looking posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or whatever other websites and activities, and switch FocusTime you deem distracting.
The RescueTime mobile program has Mechanically silence your phone when you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you can set up other automation with the support of third-party providers IFTTTFree in iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence additional distractions. By way of instance, you may create a rule with IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”When I empower FocusTime, then mechanically set my Slack standing to busy.”
RescueTime also Provides you the Choice to log time pc Idle moment. Any time RescueTime notices the computer was idle for several minutes in a row, it pops up a dialogue asking if you were in a meeting, on the phone, taking break, and so on, and lets you classify the idle time accordingly.
Advantages of RescueTime
Here is a Number of the advantages of using RescueTime Over solutions. Rescuetime Free Download
At its heart, RescueTime does something — monitor time. It is not unique, When you look at it like this. Technically, you could do this using a spreadsheet or any of those dozens of programs on the internet.
But RescueTime’s attribute set is unique due to The way that it tracks time and exactly what it does with the information (aka, you you’ll really use).
RescueTime watches that windows have Activity, looks at the window name, and instances the action in this window. It’s constantly running in the background always watching.
Unobtrustive, 100% Automated tracking makes RescueTime worthwhile. There’s no friction or hurdle to monitoring time.
Since RescueTime’s monitoring feature solves that Problem, you’ll have data that is complete, useful & appropriate.
RescueTime’s other features focus on making their Core feature. They don’t attempt to add on features like time-tracking & billing. They don’t attempt to get into any side businesses.
They do have Feature in an interesting way. By Way of Example, the Get Focused! Feature blocks deflecting sites and/or apps from running when chosen.
They have goals and alarms that Permit You to pick What you want to occur when X occurs — and RescueTime can do that based on what it’s monitoring.
I love how RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Instead of having to search and put in it 100% manually, then you select a time interval that is unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can customize the buttons to make logging Offline time quick and easy.
It’s a minimalist feature but that Making it great. It’s well-done, straightforward and simple.
Pricing and Strategies
RescueTime offers two tiers of support: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 a month or $72 per year). Businesses or organizations that are looking to use RescueTime across a group of people pay the exact same speed as Premium subscribers.
RescueTime Lite offers plenty for someone who has never Tracked her or his period. The app monitors which websites and applications you use, and also how long spent in or on each of them. You may categorize each program and website you use on a Productive/Unproductive scale, and RescueTime generates a couple of primary reports showing the best way to spend your own time. Lite members can set weekly objectives, such as”spend hours per week on productive tasks and fewer than Y minutes on unproductive products.” You can get a report email. For reports, you are limited to a three-month history, nevertheless.
Paying subscribers get everything from the free Lite program, Plus reports and extra features, including an history. Premium comes with alerts you can empower for when you reach on goals. Comparing RescueTime’s price to that of other apps Needs an open mind because apps do exactly what RescueTime does. Qbserve is among the apps you may find, and it charges a level one-time fee of $40.
We can, however, look at more Programs for freelancers who contain tools for generating invoices. HarvestFree at Harvest is a example. At $12 per person per month for Premium, it costs over RescueTime, but it’s a clear return on investment because it helps ensure more accurate billing. How you’ll interpret RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a consequence is much less clear.
Toggl Popular among salespeople, prices $9 a month, and it provides you clear tools for monitoring time spent on jobs with the usual end aim of charging clients. Toggl doesn’t contain its own invoicing tools, but it has integration options for linking with invoicing services.
A Couple of programs are nearer to RescueTime in what they have to Offer, for example Slife, although they tend to have fewer attributes even if they are free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is totally free to use.
And when you are saved by the attributes only 1 hour per month then it’s paid for itself even if you are making US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment which makes sense.
A problem with tracking programs of all kinds is That they have to be on. The”always on” feature can cause performance problems on laptops & desktop computers. It can cause battery issues .
But in my experience, RescueTime causes neither. It’s running from startup on my Macbook Pro, my Windows PC, and also my Nexus 5x mobile phone. I have never tracked any functionality or battery issues to the program.
It is lightweight and well-built.
I like the fact that the mobile app doesn’t demand Dozens of permissions. It demands access but doesn’t attempt to track contacts location, emails, or some of those normal privacy violating other programs ask for.
It is quick to install and syncs using an internet dashboard. It pulls in data from all sources and crunches on the data if you are on the Premium program or from next day on the plan.
What is the point of data if it can’t be interpreted by you Or put it to use? Rescuetime Free Download
RescueTime’s reports solves this problem — and in Ways is the entire point of working with the program.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses colorful bar graphs and Pie graphs to show exactly what you are (and aren’t ) doing.
You can opt to receive emails reports every day, Week or even month.
And on Top of That, you can dig into the Reporting with various filters and overlays to find out your customs.
It to determine that the actual amount of Time that each task happens.
When I working for a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time tracked to Gchats and Instant Messages was astonishing. It altered processes not only for me personally, but also my job managers.
Now that I’m on my own with no employees I can see the precise time that I devote to tasks that matter. I am able to build around those.
And Simply to reiterate Built-in to the software. The Dashboard is on my default — and even reports that are advanced are pre-built.
It’s all effective, seamless and quick so that you While analyzing your time, are wasting time.
One of the key selling points of RescueTime is their feature set minimalism. They do something and they do it well.
That said people using their merchandise Have time-based applications needs. When it’s project management, billing, staff time tracking or anything else — your time needs usually don’t stop with measuring, monitoring and categorization.
To solve that problem, RescueTime’s software Integrates with a massive range. They’ve an API and integrations with shared software.
Whether you are Time tracking into invoicing applications like FreshBooks or a project manager that needs to collate staff member’s time, RescueTime will integrate with this.
Cons of RescueTime
Like any software RescueTime is Perfect nor can it be the ideal fit for everyone. Here’s some disadvantages that I’ve noticed over time. Rescuetime Free Download
Default Get Focused! Groups
In general, RescueTime’s categories are pretty good. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for many people. And for tracking, RescueTime’s categories are fast & easy to fix.
However, RescueTime’s classes News, deflecting sites and research sites’ subdomains.
I can not use the Get Focused! Functionality for any Task that needs research (aka visiting a bunch of different sites ).
Ironically, the time I need smart blocking Functionality is when I am doing research for a post
There’s a fine line between this is productive and When I’m researching this is distracting. It’d be good to use RescueTime, but the categories aren’t accurate enough for this to work.
The Main issue is the Block Sites work Is unavailable in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I can add sites to unblock.
And if I am visiting several sites were blocked by dozen — Adding them quickly becomes the time wasting.
If You’re Looking for an app that will block Specific sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or any time management software) Heightens the prejudice towards efficiency .
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours Every Day, Every day with perfect focus — you are still doing the incorrect thing.
The most important Element in time direction is to Work on the things .
And that. RescueTime Can not solve that problem.
In certain ways, Actually, RescueTime can hurt your By pushing you towards better doing over research approach and planning Attempts.
If efficacy is the core issue, then RescueTime isn’t for you. It’ll only make things worse.
Instead, I’d recommend reading some of these books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me personally. It is not for everybody and has some attribute quirks and disadvantages.
Nevertheless, the thing it’s provided is perspective. It’s easy to think that you just”work a ton” or are”not addicted to a phone” or”spend so much time writing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
But the information doesn’t lie. And using RescueTime to Get accurate time data on your time will be able to help you conserve your own time and place your own life. Rescuetime Free Download
