RescueTime has been part of my working life For at least 6 decades, but I have never sat down to compose a RescueTime inspection until a few months ago. Rescuetime For Safari
A Couple of months ago declared my first year of self-employment. I took the time to my tools and working processes to make sure I had a moment equilibrium among all of my priorities.
After all — if you are paid Your time is your only non-renewable resource. If you are going to handle anything, it ought to become your time.
Since nearly all of my priorities are on A pc — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core component of that.
Here is my RescueTime review with pros, cons, utilize Next steps and Instances according to my expertise.
What Is RescueTime?
RescueTime is a time management & Productivity software company founded in 2008. The RescueTime app runs in the background of your devices automatically categorizing your own activity, measuring and monitoring.

The app relies on Peter Drucker’s (the famous Management consultant) maxim that”what gets measured, gets managed.”
RescueTime requires the tracking of time That you truly track your time so that, and makes it painless and automatic .

Rescuing Your Period
To reiterate, RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the Feel that it helps you improve your time-management abilities. It collects data about the apps and sites you use, then generates reports based on that info.
To Begin, you install a and create an account Desktop program on your own personal computer (s) and a mobile app on Android apparatus ) There’s no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the information it needs to perform its function. Those apps quietly and invisibly track which programs you use and which websites you visit, in addition to the quantity of time you spend on them.
The tough nut to crack is the Way to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you must customize your account from the RescueTime site and tell the app more about what you believe productive versus unproductive action. The more you fine-tune it to your particular circumstances, the better your results. As an instance, somebody who works in the financing industry may classify reading financial news on web sites such as MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that’s an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize every program and site on a 5-point Scale of very productive, productive, impartial, unproductive, and very unproductive. You can even categorize activity into perform categorizes. For instance, I list Google Docs as quite productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, and it is a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I’m trying to function, and I’ve categorized it as such.
In the desktop program, there’s an easy set of controllers That lets you pause RescueTime for a quarter hour, 1 hour, or till tomorrow, providing you easy access to switching the program off for breaks or days once you wrap up early.
When faced with RescueTime’s proposal –We will track All you do and provide you insights about your habits! –some individuals may, justifiably, be worried about their privacy and the safety of information in their hardware. Should you work with sensitive info on the internet or store sensitive information on your own computers and mobile devices, you are going to want to browse RescueTime’s privacy and security statements closely.
If your worries are somewhat more relaxed and You Just Don’t Want RescueTime tracking you on the weekend, you’ve got control over the days and times the app monitors your behaviour. It is simple to set it to only watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever schedule suits you.
I have used RescueTime for decades, and that I do not check my Daily productivity reports. I like to let the service run in the background so that when I do want to find a better image of how I have been spending my time, a good quantity of information is awaiting me.
When I do go through the reports, however, they’re Magnificent. I really like the variety, giving you get numerous methods of knowing your productivity and customs, from bar charts and pie graphs that reveal lump amounts of activity, to line things of applications you used.
1 simple but effective piece of advice RescueTime Provides is an investigation of when during the daytime you are inclined to be the most productive. I wasn’t surprised to observe that my brain peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that matches pretty well with what I understand about my habits. If you have never studied your productivity, however, that may be a beneficial revelation for you, one which might help you schedule your times more .
The longer you use RescueTime Premium, the more useful the Data becomesbecause you may view your statistics daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, it is possible to toggle which days and times RescueTime records your action so it works automatically on weekends, for example. Rescuetime For Safari
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes from that which You make of the data and the way you use that data to affect your behavior. Changing behavior is hard, but getting rich insights doesn’t need to be.
One of the manners RescueTime makes it Simple to understand how To interpret all of the data it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily evaluation, shown as a percent, comes from calculating the percentage of time spent very productive, effective, impartial, unproductive, and incredibly wasteful jobs. To be clear, no one is advocating you target to get a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog post explaining the productivity Score notes that the average score is 67 percent, and the average is 79 percent. The majority of people want to do some work which isn’t considered”very productive” throughout daily. The whole point of using RescueTime will be to help you work out how to focus on productive and incredibly productive tasks if you will need to and perhaps save less productive activities for times when your ability to focus has been waning anyway.
Jobs that are less productive are not exactly the Exact Same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a simple and smart feature for curbing behaviour that is unwanted, like getting sucked into websites that are deflecting . A feature called FocusTime, when enabled, blocks your ability to access certain websites for a period of time you specify. It takes a little setting up and personalization, but it’s quite powerful, after it’s ready to deploy. For example, let’s say you wish to to finish a report, and also to make progress on it, you need to concentrate hardcore for the next thirty minutes. Switch on FocusTime, and it may prevent you from looking at email, posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or other websites and actions you deem distracting.
The RescueTime mobile app has a setting that will Silence your phone when you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you may set up other automation with the support of third-party providers IFTTTFree in iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence other distractions. For example, you can make a rule using IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”If I enable FocusTime, then automatically set my Slack standing to active.”
RescueTime also gives you the Choice to log time computer Idle moment. Any time RescueTime finds that the computer was idle for many minutes in a row, it pops up a dialogue asking if you were in a meeting, on the telephone, taking break, etc, and lets you categorize the idle time accordingly.
Pros of RescueTime
Here’s some of the advantages of using RescueTime Over solutions. Rescuetime For Safari
At its heart, RescueTime does one thing — monitor time. If you look at it that way, it is not super special. Technically, you could do that with a spreadsheet or some of those dozens of apps that are free online.
But RescueTime’s attribute set How it monitors time and exactly what it does with the information (aka, you you’ll actually use).
RescueTime watches that windows have Action, looks at instances, and the window title the action in that window. It is always running in the background watching.
Unobtrustive, 100 monitoring makes RescueTime worthwhile. There is not any friction or hurdle to monitoring time.
Since RescueTime’s tracking feature simplifies that Problem, you’ll have data that’s complete, useful & appropriate.
RescueTime’s other features focus on making their Core attribute better. They do not try to include like time-tracking & charging. They don’t try to get into any side businesses.
They do have Attribute in an interesting way. By Way of Example, the Get Focused! Feature blocks programs from running when selected.
They have alarms and goals that Permit You to decide What when X happens, you want to happen — and RescueTime can do that based on which it’s tracking.
I love RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Instead of being required to search and put in it in 100% manually, you pick a time interval that’s unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can customize the buttons to create logging Offline time easy and quick.
It’s a minimalist feature set — but that What makes it great. It’s straightforward, easy and well-done.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime offers two tiers of service: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 a month or $72 per year). Organizations or businesses that are looking to use RescueTime across a group of individuals pay the same speed.
RescueTime Lite offers Tracked his or her period before. The program monitors which websites and applications you use, and how much time spent on or in each of these. You can categorize every program and website you are using on a Productive/Unproductive scale, and RescueTime generates a couple of basic reports showing how you spend your time. Lite members can place weekly objectives, such as”spend hours each week on productive jobs and fewer than Y minutes on faulty items.” It’s possible to get a weekly report email. For reports, you’re limited to some history, however.
Subscribers get everything in the Lite plan that is free, Plus reports and features, including an unlimited report history. Premium comes with alerts you can empower for if you hit daily objectives. You can more accurately log time spent away from the computer, noting if you’re in a meeting, on a telephone call, or just out to dinner. Additionally, there is a Get Focused option, which lets you block websites that are distracting for a time period you set. Rescuetime For Safari
Comparing RescueTime’s price to that of other apps Needs an open mind as few apps do exactly what RescueTime does. Qbserve is among the apps you may find, and it costs a level one-time fee of $40.
We can, however, look at more Programs for freelancers who typically include tools for generating bills. HarvestFree in Harvest is an adequate example. At $12 per individual per month for Premium, it costs over RescueTime, but it’s a very clear return on investment since it helps ensure more accurate charging. How you will translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is much less clear.
Another Classic time-tracking app that is, toggl Popular among salespeople, prices $9 per month, and it also gives you tools for monitoring time spent on projects with charging clients’ end goal. It has integration options for linking with invoicing services, although toggl does not include its own invoicing tools.
A few apps are nearer to RescueTime in what they have to Offer, such as Slife, even though they tend to have fewer features even if they’re free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is free to use.
And when you are saved by the features just One hour per month then it’s paid for itself even if you are only making US minimum wage.
A problem with monitoring apps of all kinds is That they constantly must be on. The”always on” attribute can cause performance issues on laptops & desktop computers. It can cause battery problems .
But in my experience, RescueTime induces neither. It is running on my Windows PC my Macbook Pro, and my Nexus 5x phone. I’ve never tracked any performance or battery problems to the program.
It is well-built and lightweight.
I like the fact that the app does not demand Dozens of permissions that are absurd. It requires access but does not attempt to monitor contacts location, emails, or some of the typical privacy violating permissions apps request.
It’s quick to install and syncs with an online dashboard. It pulls in data from all sources at the exact same period, and crunches the data if you’re on the Premium plan or from next day to the program.
What’s the purpose of information if you can not interpret it Or place it to use? Rescuetime For Safari
RescueTime’s accounts solves this issue — and in Many ways is the entire purpose of working with the app.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses bar graphs and Pie charts to show exactly what you are (and aren’t ) doing.
You can opt to receive emails reports Daily, Week or even month.
And on Top of That, you can dig to the Reporting with filters and overlays to find your habits out.
It is really eye-opening to determine that the real amount of Time that each job takes.
When I trying to find a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time tracked to Gchats and Instant Messages was astounding. It altered processes not only for me, but also my project supervisors.
Now I’m on my own I can see the time that I devote to jobs that matter. I am able to build my entire day .
And Simply to reiterate the reports are Built-in to the software. The Dashboard is on my default — as well as reports that are innovative are pre-built.
It’s all effective, seamless and quick so that you While analyzing your time, aren’t ironically wasting time.
Among the selling points of RescueTime is their feature set minimalism. They do one thing and they do it well.
That said people using their merchandise Have applications needs that are time-based. Whether it’s billing, project management, team time monitoring or anything else — your time needs usually don’t stop with monitoring, measuring and categorization.
To resolve that Issue, RescueTime’s software Integrates with a assortment of software. They have direct integrations and an open API with software.
Whether you are a freelancer trying to incorporate Time tracking into invoicing software like FreshBooks or even a job manager that needs to collate staff member’s time, RescueTime will integrate with it.
Disadvantages of RescueTime
Like any software RescueTime is neither Nor is it the ideal fit for everybody. Here is some disadvantages that I’ve noticed over the years. Rescuetime For Safari
Default Get Focused! Categories
Generally, RescueTime’s categories good. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for most people. And for general tracking, RescueTime’s categories are fast & easy to repair.
However, RescueTime’s categories News, sites and research sites’ subdomains.
I can not use the Get Focused! Performance for almost any Task that needs research (aka visiting a bunch of different sites ).
The time I need smart blocking Performance is when I’m doing research for a post
There’s a fine line between this really is productive and When I am researching This really is distracting. It would be great to use RescueTime, but the categories are not true enough for it to operate.
The Main problem is the Block Sites function Is not available in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I can add websites to unblock.
And when I am visiting several sites were blocked by dozen — Adding them becomes time wasting.
If you are looking for an app that will block just Specific sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management software) Heightens the bias towards efficiency .
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours Every Day, Daily with focus — you are still doing the thing that is incorrect.
The most important Element in time direction is to Work on the ideal things .
And that is a factor that’s 100% on you. RescueTime Can not fix that issue.
In fact, in some ways, RescueTime can hurt your Attempts by pushing you towards efficient doing over approach, research and planning.
If effectiveness is the heart issue RescueTime is not for you. It will only make matters worse.
I’d recommend reading some of these books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me personally. It’s not for everyone and has disadvantages and some attribute quirks.
That said, the best thing is perspective. It’s easy to think that you”work a ton” or are”not hooked on your phone” or”spend as much time composing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
However, the data doesn’t lie. And using RescueTime to Get precise time data onto your digital time can help your time is literally rescued by you and put your own life. Rescuetime For Safari
