Since almost all of my priorities are on A pc — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core component of that.

Rescuing Your Period
To reiterate, RescumeTime is a productivity tool at the Sense that it helps you improve your time-management abilities. It gathers data about the programs and sites you use, and then generates reports based on that info.
You create an account and install a to get started Desktop program in your own computer(s) and a mobile app on Android devices. There is no iOS app because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the information it needs to carry out its purpose. Those apps quietly and invisibly monitor which apps you use and which sites you visit, in addition to the quantity of time you spend on them.
The hard nut to crack is how to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you must customize your accounts from the RescueTime site and inform the app more about what you believe productive versus unproductive activity. The further you fine-tune it to your specific circumstances, the greater your results. For example, someone who works in the financing industry may classify reading financial news on sites such as MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that is an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize every app and site on a 5-point Scale of quite productive, productive, neutral, dependable, and incredibly unproductive. You can also categorize activity into perform categorizes. For instance, I record Google Docs as quite productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, which will be a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I’m trying to work, and I’ve categorized it .
From the desktop app, there’s an easy set of controls That allows you to pause RescueTime for 15 minutes, one hour, or till tomorrow, giving you easy access to shifting the program off for breaks or days when you wrap up early.
When confronted with RescueTime’s proposition–We’ll track All you do and provide you insights about your customs! –some individuals might, justifiably, be worried about their privacy and the safety of information on their own hardware. Should you use sensitive info online or keep sensitive information in your computers and mobile devices, you are going to want to read RescueTime’s privacy and safety statements closely.
If your concerns are somewhat more relaxed and you simply don’t Want RescueTime monitoring you on the weekend, so you have control over the times and days the app monitors your behavior. You can easily set it to only watch your activity from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever program suits you.
I have used RescueTime for years, and I don’t check my Daily, productivity reports. I love to allow the service run in the background so that when I really do want to get a better image of how I’ve been spending my own time, a fantastic quantity of information is awaiting me.
While I do go through the reports, however, they’re Magnificent. I love the variety, providing you get numerous ways of understanding your productivity and habits, from bar charts and pie graphs that show lump sums of action, to line items of software you used.
1 simple but powerful piece of information RescueTime Provides is an analysis of when during the daytime you tend to be the most productive. I was not surprised to observe that my mind peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits pretty well with what I know about my customs. If you’ve never analyzed your productivity, however, that might be a useful revelation for you, one that might help you schedule your times more productively.
The more time you use RescueTime Premium, the more applicable the Data becomesbecause you may see your data daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, you can toggle that times and days RescueTime records your activity so it works automatically on weekends, for example. Rescue Time Download Free
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes from that which You make of the data and the way you use that information to influence your own behavior. Changing behavior is tough, but getting rich insights does not have to be.
Among those ways RescueTime makes it easy to understand how To interpret all of the data that it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily score, shown as a percent, comes from calculating the percent of time spent very productive, productive, neutral, unproductive, and very wasteful jobs. To be clear, no one is advocating you aim to get a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog post describing the productivity Score notes that the score is 67 percent, and the average is 79 percent. Most people need to do some work which is not considered”very productive” during their day. The whole purpose of using RescueTime is to help you work out how to concentrate on productive and very productive tasks when you will need to and possibly save productive tasks for times when your ability to focus has been waning anyway.
Tasks are not the Exact Same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a smart and straightforward feature for controlling behaviour, like getting sucked into websites that are deflecting , also. A feature called FocusTime, when empowered, blocks your ability to access websites for a time period you specify. It takes a little setting up and customization, but once it’s ready to deploy, it is quite powerful. For example, let us say you wish to to finish a record, and to make progress on it, you need to concentrate hardcore for the next 30 minutes. Switch on FocusTime, and it may prevent you from looking posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or whatever other sites and activities you deem distracting.
The RescueTime mobile app has Silence your phone you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you may set up other automation with the help of third-party providers IFTTTFree at iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence other distractions. By way of example, you may create a rule using IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that says,”If I empower FocusTime, then mechanically set my Slack status to active.”
RescueTime also Provides you the Choice to log time computer Idle time. Whenever RescueTime notices the computer was idle for several minutes in a row, so it pops up a dialogue asking if you were at a meeting, on the telephone, taking break, etc, and permits you to categorize the idle time accordingly.
Advantages of RescueTime
Here’s a Number of the advantages of utilizing RescueTime Over other solutions. Rescue Time Download Free
At its heart, RescueTime does one thing — monitor time. It’s not special if you look at it that way. Technically, you can do any of those dozens of apps or this using a spreadsheet on the internet.
But RescueTime’s attribute set The way that it monitors time and what it does with the data (aka, one you’ll actually use).
RescueTime watches which windows have Action, looks at times, and the window name the action in that window. It’s always running in the background watching.
Unobtrustive, 100 tracking makes RescueTime rewarding. There’s no friction or hurdle to tracking time.
Since RescueTime’s monitoring feature simplifies that Problem, you will have data that’s complete, useful & appropriate.
RescueTime’s other attributes focus on making their Core attribute. Like time-tracking & charging for 15, they do not try to include on characteristics that are complementary. They don’t attempt to get into any side companies.
They do have a few features that use the monitoring Attribute in an intriguing way. The Get Focused! From running when selected feature blocks programs.
They have goals and alarms that allow you to decide What you want to happen when X happens — and RescueTime can do this based on what it is monitoring.
I also love how RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Instead of being required to search and add it 100% manually, then you pick a time period that’s unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can customize the buttons to create logging Offline time quick and easy.
It’s a minimalist feature but that Making it great. It is well-done, straightforward and simple.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime provides two tiers of service: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 per month or $72 per year). Organizations or businesses that want to use RescueTime across a bunch of people pay the exact same speed.
RescueTime Lite offers Monitored his or her period before. The program monitors which websites and applications you use, and also how much time spent in or on each of these. You can categorize every app and site you use on a Productive/Unproductive scale, also RescueTime generates a few basic reports demonstrating how you spend your own time. Lite members can set weekly objectives, such as”spend X hours each week on productive tasks and fewer than Y minutes on faulty products.” It’s possible to get a weekly report email for you. Paying subscribers get everything from the free Lite plan, Plus features and reports, including an report history. Premium comes with alerts you can enable for if you reach goals. Comparing RescueTime’s price to that of other programs Needs an open mind as programs do precisely what RescueTime does. Qbserve is one of the most similar apps you may find, and it costs a level one-time fee of $40.
We can look at more Apps for freelancers that include tools for creating invoices. HarvestFree in Harvest is a decent example. At $12 per person a month for Premium, it costs more than RescueTime, but it’s a very clear return on investment because it helps ensure more accurate charging. How you’ll translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a consequence is not as clear.
Another traditional app that’s, toggl Popular among freelancers, costs $9 a month, and in addition, it gives you clear tools for tracking time spent on jobs with billing clients’ typical end aim. It has many integration options for connecting with additional invoicing services, although toggl doesn’t include its own invoicing tools.
A Couple of programs are closer to RescueTime in what they have to Provide, such as Slife, even though they have a tendency to have fewer features even if they’re free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is free to use.
And if the attributes save you just One hour per month it’s paid for itself even if you are making US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment which makes sense.
A problem with monitoring programs of all kinds is That they constantly must be on. The”always on” attribute can lead to performance problems on notebooks & desktop computers. Battery problems can be caused by it on mobile devices.
But in my experience, RescueTime causes neither. It is running on my Windows PC, my Macbook Pro, along with also my Nexus 5x mobile phone from startup. I’ve never tracked any battery or functionality problems.
It’s well-built and lightweight.
I enjoy the fact that the cellular app doesn’t demand Heaps of absurd permissions. It demands access but does not try to monitor location, contacts, emails, or any of those typical privacy violating other apps that are permissions request.
It’s quick to set up and syncs with an online dashboard. It pulls in data from all sources and crunches on the data quickly if you are on the Premium plan or by next day to the free plan.
What is the purpose of information if you can not interpret it ? Rescue Time Download Free
RescueTime’s accounts solves that problem — and in Ways is the whole point of using the program.

You can Choose to receive reports Daily, Week or even month.
And best of all, you can dig deep to the Reporting with various filters and overlays to find out your habits.
It to see that the amount of Time that each task takes.
When I working for a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time tracked to Gchats and Instant Messages was astounding. It changed processes not only for me personally, but also my job managers.
Now that I’m on my own — I can see the time that I devote to tasks that matter. I can build around those.
And Simply to reiterate — all of the reports are Built-in into the software. The Dashboard is on my default — and even reports that are advanced are pre-built.
It’s all fast, seamless and effective so that you When assessing your time Are not ironically wasting time.
One of the selling points of RescueTime is their feature set minimalism. They do something and they do it well.
That said all people using their product Have time-based software needs. When it’s charging, project management, team time tracking or something else — your time needs do not cease with measuring tracking and categorization.
To solve that Issue, RescueTime’s applications Integrates with a huge range of other software. They’ve an open API and integrations with applications that is common.
Whether you are Time tracking into even a job manager that must collate team member’s time or invoicing applications like FreshBooks, RescueTime will probably integrate with it.
Disadvantages of RescueTime
Like any software RescueTime is Nor can it be the ideal fit for everyone. Here is some pitfalls that I’ve noticed over time. Rescue Time Download Free
Default Get Focused! Categories
In general, RescueTime’s classes are pretty good. Sites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for most people. And for monitoring, RescueTime’s categories are quick & easy to repair.
However, RescueTime’s categories can be off with general News, research websites and deflecting sites’ subdomains.
I can not use the Get Focused! Performance for any Task which requires research (aka visiting a bunch of different sites ).
Paradoxically, the time I need smart blocking Performance is when I am doing research for a post
There is a fine line between this really is effective and When I’m researching, This really is distracting. It’d be great to use RescueTime, but the categories aren’t accurate enough for it to operate.
The root issue is the Block Sites function Is unavailable in reverse (ie, add certain sites to block). I can only add websites to unblock.
And when I am visiting websites were blocked by dozen — Manually adding them becomes time wasting.
If you are looking for an program that will block just Deflecting sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management applications ) Heightens the prejudice towards efficiency .
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours per day, Every day with focus that is perfect — you are doing the incorrect thing.
The most important Element in time direction is to Work on the ideal things .
And that. RescueTime Can’t fix that problem.
In certain ways, in fact, RescueTime can damage your By pushing you towards doing over planning, research and strategy efforts.
If efficacy is the heart issue, then RescueTime isn’t for you. It’ll only make matters worse.
I’d recommend reading a few of them books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me. It’s not for everyone and has some feature quirks and disadvantages.
That said, the best thing it is supplied is perspective. It’s easy to think that you just”work a ton” or are”not addicted to your telephone” or”spend as much time composing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
But the information does not lie. And using RescueTime to Get precise time data onto your time will be able to help you literally conserve your time and place your own life. Rescue Time Download Free
