RescueTime has been a part of my working life For more than 6 decades, but I’ve never sat down to write a RescueTime inspection until only a few months ago. My Life Software Download

After all — whether You’re paid Your time is the only resource. If you are going to manage anything, it ought to be your time.
Since nearly all my professional priorities are on A computer — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core component of that.

What Is RescueTime?
RescueTime is a time management & Productivity software firm founded in 2008. The RescueTime program runs in the background of your apparatus measuring, tracking and categorizing your own activity.

Rescuing Your Time
RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the to reiterate Sense that it helps your time-management abilities improve. It collects data about the programs and sites you use, then generates reports based on that information.
To get started, you create an account and install a Desktop program in your computer(s) and a cell app on Android apparatus ) There’s no iOS program because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the data it needs to carry out its purpose. Those programs quietly and invisibly monitor which apps you use and which websites you visit, in addition to the amount of time you spend on these.
The tough nut to crack is the Way to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you must customize your accounts from the RescueTime site and inform the app more about what you consider productive versus unproductive activity. The more you fine-tune it to your particular circumstances, the greater your results. As an instance, someone who works in the financing industry might classify reading financial news on sites such as MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity task, whereas for me, that’s an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize every program and site on a 5-point Scale of very productive, productive, neutral, dependable, and very unproductive. You can also categorize action into work categorizes. For instance, I record Google Docs as very productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, which is a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is very distracting when I’m trying to function, and I have categorized it .
In the desktop app, there’s an easy set of controllers That allows you to pause RescueTime for a quarter hour, 1 hour, or till tomorrow, providing you easy access to switching the app off for days or breaks when you wrap up early.
When confronted with RescueTime’s proposal –We’ll monitor All you do and provide you insights about your customs! –some people may, justifiably, worry about their privacy and the safety of information on their hardware. If you work with sensitive information online or keep sensitive information on your computers and mobile devices, you’ll want to browse RescueTime’s privacy and safety statements closely.
If your concerns are more relaxed and you simply don’t Want RescueTime monitoring you on the weekend, so you’ve got control over the days and times the program monitors your behaviour. You can easily set it to just watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever program suits you.
I have used RescueTime for decades, and I don’t check my Every day, productivity reports. I like to allow the service run in the background so that when I really do want to get a better picture of how I’ve been spending my time, a good amount of information is waiting for me.
When I do go through the reports, however, they are Magnificent. I love the variety, providing you get multiple ways of understanding your productivity and customs, from bar charts and pie charts that reveal lump amounts of activity, to line items of applications you employed.
1 simple but powerful piece of advice RescueTime Provides is an investigation of when during the day you are inclined to be the most successful. I was not surprised to see that my mind peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits fairly well with what I understand about my customs. If you have never analyzed your productivity, nevertheless, that may be a useful revelation for you, one that may help you schedule your days more productively.
The longer you use RescueTime Premium, the more applicable the Data becomesbecause you can see your data daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, it is possible to toggle that days and times RescueTime records your activity so that it turns off automatically on weekends, for instance. My Life Software Download
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes in that which You make of the data and the way you use that data to affect your own behavior. Changing behaviour is hard, but getting rich insights does not have to be.
Among those ways RescueTime makes it easy to understand how To interpret all the data it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily evaluation, shown as a percentage, comes from calculating the percent of time spent on very productive, effective, impartial, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive tasks. To be clear, nobody is advocating you target for a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog article describing the productivity Score notes that the typical score is 67 percent, and the on site average is 79 percent. The majority of people need to do some work which is not considered”very productive” during daily. The whole purpose of using RescueTime is to help you figure out how to focus on productive and incredibly productive tasks when you will need to and perhaps save less productive activities for times as soon as your ability to concentrate has been waning anyway.
Jobs are not the same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a straightforward and smart feature for controlling behavior, such as getting sucked into distracting sites . A feature called FocusTime, when enabled, blocks your ability to access specific sites for a period of time you specify. It requires a little setup and customization, but after it is ready to set up, it is quite powerful. For example, let’s say you want to to finish a record, and to make progress on it, you need to concentrate hardcore for the next 30 minutes. It can block you from taking a look at email, posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or other websites and actions, and switch on FocusTime you deem deflecting.
The RescueTime mobile app has a setting that will Silence your phone whenever you enable FocusTime. Likewise, you can set up other automation with the help of third-party services IFTTTFree in iTunes Store and Zapier to block or silence additional distractions. For instance, you can create a rule using IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”When I enable FocusTime, then mechanically set my Slack standing to busy.”
RescueTime also gives you the Choice Idle time. Any time RescueTime finds that the computer has been idle for many minutes at a row, so it pops up a dialog asking if you were at a meeting, on the phone, taking break, etc, and permits you to classify the idle time accordingly.
Advantages of RescueTime
Here’s a Number of the advantages of utilizing RescueTime Over solutions. My Life Software Download
At its core, RescueTime does one thing — track time. If you look at it like this, it’s not unique. Technically, you can do any of the dozens of free apps or this with a spreadsheet online.
However, RescueTime’s attribute set is unique because of How it tracks time and exactly what it does with the information (aka, one you’ll really use).
RescueTime watches that windows have Activity, looks at the window name, and instances the activity in that window. It is always running in the background — always watching.
Unobtrustive, Automated tracking that is 100% makes RescueTime worthwhile. There is no friction or barrier to tracking time.
Since RescueTime’s tracking feature solves that Problem, you will have data that’s complete, correct & useful.
RescueTime’s other attributes focus on producing their Core feature better. Like time-tracking & charging for 15, they don’t attempt to add on characteristics that are complementary. They don’t try to enter any side businesses.
They do have Feature in an interesting manner. For example, the Get Focused! When selected from running feature blocks programs.
They have aims and alerts that allow you to decide What you want to occur when X occurs — and RescueTime can do that based on what it’s monitoring.
I love RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Rather than having to search and add it in 100% manually, you select a time interval that is unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can customize the buttons to make logging Offline time quick and easy.
It is a minimalist feature set — but that What makes it great. It is simple, simple and well-done.
Pricing and Strategies
RescueTime provides two tiers of support: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 per month or $72 annually ). Businesses or organizations that want to use RescueTime across a group of people pay the exact same rate as Premium subscribers.
RescueTime Lite offers Tracked his or her time. The program monitors which sites and programs you use, and also how much time spent in or on each of them. You can categorize every program and website you are using on a Productive/Unproductive scale, and RescueTime generates a few basic reports demonstrating the best way to spend your own time. Lite members can place weekly goals, such as”spend hours per week on productive tasks and fewer than Y minutes on unproductive items.” You can get a weekly report email for you. For reports, you’re confined to a history.
Paying subscribers get everything from the Lite plan, Plus reports and features, including an history. Premium comes with alerts you can empower for if you hit daily objectives. You can more accurately log time spent away from the computer, noting if you’re in a meeting, on a phone call, or simply out to lunch. There is a Get Focused alternative, which permits you to block websites that are distracting for a time period you place. My Life Software Download
Assessing RescueTime’s price to that of other apps Needs an open mind as apps do precisely what RescueTime does. Qbserve is among the apps you may find, and it costs a flat fee of $40.
We can, however, look at more Apps for freelancers who typically include tools for bills. HarvestFree at Harvest is a example. At $12 per person a month for Premium, it costs over RescueTime, but it has a clear return on investment because it helps to ensure more accurate billing. How you’ll translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is not as clear.
Another Classic app that’s, toggl Popular among freelancers, costs $9 a month, and it provides you tools for tracking time spent on jobs with billing clients’ usual end goal. Toggl doesn’t include its own invoicing tools, but it has integration options for connecting with additional invoicing services.
A Couple of apps are closer to RescueTime in what they have to Provide, such as Slife, although they tend to have fewer features even if they’re free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is free to use.
And if you are saved by the reporting/advanced attributes only One hour each month it is paid for itself even if you are only making US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment which makes sense.
A problem with tracking apps of all kinds is That they constantly must be on. The”always on” feature can cause performance issues on notebooks & desktop computers. Battery problems can be caused by it .
But in my experience, RescueTime causes neither. It’s running from startup in my Nexus 5x mobile phone, my Windows PC, and my Macbook Pro. I’ve never tracked any functionality or battery issues.
It is well-built and lightweight.
I enjoy the fact that the app does not demand Heaps of ridiculous permissions. It demands access to use data, but doesn’t try to track contacts location, emails, or any of those privacy violating other programs that are permissions request.
It is quick to set up and syncs using an internet dashboard. It crunches the information quickly if you are on the Premium plan or from next day on the program, and pulls in data from all sources in precisely the same period.
What’s the point of data if you can not interpret it Or put it to use? My Life Software Download
RescueTime’s accounts solves this problem — and in Ways is the point of working with the program.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses colorful bar and Pie charts to reveal exactly what you are (and aren’t ) doing.
You can Choose to receive reports every day, Week or even month.
And on Top of That, you can dig into the Reporting with various filters and overlays to find your habits out.
It to determine that the actual amount of Time that each task takes.
When I trying to find a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time monitored to Gchats and Instant Messages was astounding. It altered my job managers , but also processes not only for me personally.
Now I’m on my own — I will see the time I devote to tasks that matter. I am able to build around those.
And Simply to reiterate Built-in into the software. The Dashboard is on my default — and reports are pre-built.
It’s all quick, seamless and powerful so that you While analyzing your time, are wasting time.
Among the Major selling points of RescueTime is their characteristic set minimalism. They do one thing and they do it nicely.
That said — many all people using their merchandise Have applications requirements. When it’s project management, billing, staff time monitoring or something your time demands usually don’t cease with measuring tracking and categorization.
To resolve that problem, RescueTime’s applications Integrates with a range of applications. They have an open API and direct integrations with applications.
Whether you are Time monitoring into even a job manager that needs to collate team member’s time or invoicing software like FreshBooks, RescueTime will integrate with it.
Cons of RescueTime
Like any applications however — RescueTime is Perfect nor can it be the ideal fit for everybody. Here is some pitfalls that I’ve noticed over the years. My Life Software Download
Default Get Focused! Categories
Generally, RescueTime’s categories are fairly good. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for many people. And for monitoring, RescueTime’s classes are quick & simple to fix.
However, RescueTime’s categories can be off with overall News, deflecting sites and research sites’ subdomains.
I can not use the Get Focused! Functionality for any Task which needs research (aka visiting a lot of different websites).
Ironically, the time that I need smart obstructing Functionality is when I’m doing research for a post
There’s a fine line between which really is productive and This is distracting when I’m researching. It would be good to use RescueTime, but the classes aren’t accurate enough for this to operate.
The Main problem is that the Block Sites function Is not available in reverse (ie, add specific sites to block). I can only add sites to unblock.
And if I’m visiting dozen blocked websites — Adding them becomes time wasting.
If you are currently looking for an app that will block only Specific sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or some time management applications ) Heightens the bias towards efficiency .
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours Every Day, Every day with perfect focus — you are still doing the thing that is wrong.
The most important Element in time direction is to Work on the ideal things .
And that. RescueTime Can’t fix that problem.
Actually, in certain ways, RescueTime can hurt your By pushing you towards better efficient doing over research strategy and planning efforts.
If effectiveness is the core issue RescueTime isn’t for you. It will only make matters worse.
I’d recommend reading some of them books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me. It is not for everybody and has pitfalls and some attribute quirks.
Nevertheless, the thing is perspective. It’s easy to think that you”work a ton” or are”not addicted to your phone” or”invest as much time composing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
However, the data doesn’t lie. And utilizing RescueTime to Get accurate time data on your time will be able to help you put your own life and conserve your own time. My Life Software Download
