Introduction Computer Software Icon
RescueTime has been a part of my life that is working For more than 6 years, but I have never sat down to compose a RescueTime review until a couple of months ago. Computer Software Icon
Declared my first year of self-employment. I took the time to reevaluate all my resources and working processes to make sure I had a solid time equilibrium among all my own priorities.
After all — if you are paid hourly or not, Your time is the only resource. If you’re likely to manage anything, it should be your time.
Since almost all of my professional priorities are on A computer — time management software (ie, RescueTime) is a core part of that.
Here is my RescueTime review with pros, cons, utilize Cases and following steps according to my expertise.
What Is RescueTime?
RescueTime is a time management & Productivity software company founded in 2008. The RescueTime program runs in the background of your devices measuring tracking and categorizing your activity.
RescueTime is a free program with a premium update That enables features and more special reporting like moment inputsignal. It delivers a reporting dash with all your information diced, sliced and sorted into charts that are useful that will help you manage your own time.
The app is based on Peter Drucker’s (the famous Management consultant) maxim that”what gets measured, gets managed.”
RescueTime requires the manual tracking of time So you actually track your time so that and makes it painless and automatic you may be conscious of time use.
Nevertheless, there are dozens and dozens of Improvement & time management tools on the Internet. What are the pros & cons of RescueTime? Here’s what I’ve noticed over the years.

Rescuing Your Period
RescumeTime is a productivity tool in the, to reiterate Sense that it helps you improve your skills. It collects data about the programs and websites you use, and then creates reports based on that info.
You create an account and install a to get started Desktop app on your own personal computer (s) and optionally a cell app on Android apparatus ) There is no iOS program because the operating system prevents RescueTime from amassing the information it needs to carry out its function. Those apps quietly and invisibly monitor which programs you use and which sites you visit, in addition to the quantity of time you spend on these.
The tough nut to crack is how to make sense of all that information. To get the best results, you must customize your accounts from the RescueTime site and inform the program more about what you consider productive versus unproductive activity. The more you fine-tune it to your particular conditions, the greater your results. For example, somebody who operates in the financing industry might classify reading financial news on sites including MarketWatch and FT.com as a productivity job, whereas for me, that’s an unproductive use of time.
You can categorize site and every app on a 5-point Scale of very productive, productive, impartial, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive. You can also categorize action into perform categorizes. By way of example, I record Google Docs as very productive, and that I categorized it as Writing, which will be a subcategory of Design and Composition. Looking at Redfin.com is quite distracting when I’m trying to work, and I have categorized it .
From the desktop program, there is a simple set of controllers That allows you to pause RescueTime for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or until tomorrow, providing you easy access to shifting the program off for breaks or days when you wrap up early.
When faced with RescueTime’s proposition–We will track Everything you do and provide you insights about your customs! –some people may, justifiably, worry about their privacy and the security of information in their own hardware. Should you use sensitive information online or keep sensitive information on your own computers and mobile devices, you are going to want to read RescueTime’s privacy and security statements carefully.
If your worries are somewhat more relaxed and You Just Don’t Want RescueTime tracking you on the weekend, so you’ve got control over the days and times the app monitors your behaviour. You can easily set it to just watch your action from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or whatever schedule suits you.
I have used RescueTime for years, and I don’t check my Every day, productivity reports. I like to allow the service run in the background so that when I do want to get a better image of how I’ve been spending my own time, a good quantity of information is waiting for me.
While I do go through the reports, however, they are Magnificent. I love the variety, giving you get multiple methods of knowing your productivity and customs, from bar charts and pie graphs that reveal lump amounts of action, to line things of software you employed.
1 simple but effective piece of advice RescueTime Supplies is an analysis of when during the day you tend to be the most successful. I wasn’t surprised to see that my mind peaks in the morning and slacks off after 2:00 p.m., as that fits pretty well with what I know about my habits. If you have never studied your productivity, nevertheless, that might be a useful revelation for you, one that may help you schedule your times more productively.
The longer you use RescueTime Premium, the more useful the Data becomesbecause you may see your statistics daily, week, month, or year. And as you might expect, it is possible to toggle which days and times RescueTime records your action so that it works automatically on weekends, for instance. Computer Software Icon
Much of the value you get from RescueTime comes in what You make of this information and how you use that information to affect your behavior. Changing behavior is tough, but getting rich insights doesn’t have to be.
Among the manners RescueTime makes it easy to understand how To interpret all of the data it collects is using a Productivity Pulse score. This daily evaluation, shown as a percent, comes from calculating the percent of time spent very productive, effective, impartial, unproductive, and incredibly unproductive tasks. To be clear, nobody is advocating you aim for a 100 percent Productivity Pulse score.
A RescueTime blog article explaining the productivity Score notes that the score is 67 percent, and the on site average is 79 percent. Most people want to do some job which isn’t considered”very productive” during daily. The entire point of using RescueTime is to help you figure out how to concentrate on productive and very productive tasks when you will need to and possibly save productive tasks for times when your ability to focus has been waning anyway.
Productive jobs are not exactly the Exact Same thing as distractions. RescueTime has a smart and simple feature for curbing unwanted behaviour, such as getting sucked into websites , also. A feature named FocusTime, when empowered, blocks your ability to access specific sites for a time period you specify. It customization and takes a little setup, but it is quite effective once it’s ready to set up. As an example, let us say you wish to to finish a report, and also to make progress on it, you need to concentrate hardcore for the next thirty minutes. It may prevent you from looking at email, posting on Twitter, checking sports scores, or whatever other websites and activities, and switch FocusTime you deem deflecting.
The RescueTime mobile program has Automatically silence your phone you empower FocusTime. Likewise, you can set up other automation with the help of third party providers IFTTTFree in iTunes Store and Zapier to obstruct or silence other distractions. By way of instance, you may make a rule using IFTTT (it stands for”if this, then that”) that states,”When I empower FocusTime, then automatically set my Slack standing to busy.”
RescueTime also Provides you the option to log time computer Idle moment. Whenever RescueTime finds that the computer has been idle for many minutes in a row, it pops up a dialogue asking if you’re at a meeting, on the telephone, taking rest, etc, and permits you to categorize the idle time accordingly.
Pros of RescueTime
Here’s a Number of the advantages of using RescueTime Over solutions. Computer Software Icon
At its heart, RescueTime does something — track time. If you look at it that way, it is not super special. Technically, you can do any of those dozens of programs that are free or that using a spreadsheet online.
But RescueTime’s feature set is special due to The way that it monitors time and exactly what it does with all the information (aka, you you’ll actually use).
RescueTime watches that windows have Activity, looks at the window name, and times the action in this window. It’s always running in the background always watching.
Automated monitoring that is 100%, unobtrustive makes RescueTime rewarding. There is no friction or hurdle to tracking time.
Since RescueTime’s tracking feature simplifies that Problem, you will have data that’s complete, useful & appropriate.
RescueTime’s other features focus on producing their Core feature better. They don’t try to include on features that are complementary like time-tracking & charging for freelancers. They don’t attempt to enter any side companies.
They do have a few attributes that use the tracking Feature in an interesting manner. By Way of Example, the Get Focused! When chosen from running feature blocks programs.
They have aims and alarms that allow you to decide What when X occurs, you want to happen — and RescueTime can do this based on what it’s monitoring.
I love how RescueTime does Offline Time Tracking. Rather than being required to search and put in it in 100% manually, then you select a time interval that is unlogged and fill in the blank.
You can even customize the buttons to make logging Offline time quick and simple.
It is a feature set — but that’s exactly What makes it great. It is straightforward, easy and well-done.
Pricing and Plans
RescueTime provides two tiers of support: Lite (free) and Premium ($9 per month or $72 per year). Organizations or Firms that want to utilize RescueTime across a bunch of people pay the same speed as Premium subscribers.
RescueTime Lite offers Monitored her or his period. The app monitors which sites and programs you use, and how much time you spend in or on each of them. You may categorize each program and site you use on a Productive/Unproductive scale, and RescueTime generates a few basic reports showing the best way to spend your time. Lite members can set weekly goals, such as”spend hours per week on productive tasks and fewer than Y minutes on faulty products.” It’s possible to find a report email for you. For reports, you are limited to a history, however.
Paying subscribers get everything in the Lite program, Plus features and reports, such as an unlimited report history. Premium comes with alerts you can enable for if you hit goals. You can more accurately log time spent away from the computer, noting whether you’re in a meeting, on a phone call, or just out to lunch. Furthermore, there is a Get Focused option, which permits you to block websites that are distracting you place. Computer Software Icon
Assessing RescueTime’s cost to that of other apps Needs an open mind because few apps do precisely what RescueTime does. Qbserve is among the very similar apps you can find, and it charges a flat fee of $40.
We could look at more Apps for freelancers that typically contain tools for creating bills. HarvestFree in Harvest is an adequate example. At $12 per individual a month for Premium, it costs over RescueTime, but it’s a clear return on investment since it helps to ensure more accurate billing. How you will translate RescueTime’s reports and make better use of your time as a result is not as clear.
Toggl, another Classic program that’s Popular among salespeople, prices $9 a month, and it provides you clear tools for tracking time spent on jobs with the end aim of billing clients. It has several integration options for connecting with other invoicing services, although toggl doesn’t contain its own invoicing tools.
A Couple of apps are nearer to RescueTime in what they have to Offer, such as Slife, even though they have a tendency to have fewer attributes even if they’re free (and Slife is).
Either way — RescueTime is a no-brainer pricing-wise. It is free to use.
And if you are saved by the reporting/advanced attributes only 1 hour each month then it’s paid for itself even if you are earning US minimum wage.
RescueTime is an investment that makes sense.
A problem with monitoring programs of all kinds is That they must be on. The”always on” attribute can cause performance issues on notebooks & desktop computers. Battery issues can be caused by it on mobile devices.
But in my experience, RescueTime induces neither. It is running from startup on my Macbook Pro, my Windows PC, along with my Nexus 5x mobile phone. I have never tracked any battery or performance problems to the program.
It’s lightweight and well-built.
I enjoy the fact that the app doesn’t demand Heaps of ridiculous permissions. It requires access but does not try to monitor emails, contacts, location, or any of the privacy that is normal violating other programs that are permissions ask for.
It’s quick to install and syncs with an internet dashboard. It pulls in data from all sources and crunches the data quickly if you’re on the Premium plan or by next day to the free program.
What’s the point of data if you can’t interpret it ? Computer Software Icon
RescueTime’s accounts solves that issue — and in Lots of ways is the whole purpose of working with the program over a spreadsheet.
RescueTime’s Dashboard uses vibrant bar and Pie charts to reveal just what you are (and are not) doing.
You can opt to receive emails reports Daily, Week or even month.
And best of all, you can dig deep into the Reporting with numerous filters and overlays to find your habits out.
It to determine that the amount of Time that each task happens.
When I working for a marketing agency in Atlanta — The time tracked to Instant Messages and Gchats was astonishing. It altered my project supervisors personally, but also processes not only for me.
Now I’m on my own I can see the time that I devote to tasks that matter. I am able to construct .
And Simply to reiterate the reports are Built-in into the computer software. The Dashboard is really on my default — as well as reports that are advanced are pre-built.
It’s all seamless, quick and effective so that you When analyzing your time, aren’t ironically wasting time.
One of the selling points of RescueTime is their characteristic set minimalism. They do one thing and they do it nicely.
That said all people using their merchandise Have applications needs that are time-based. Whether it’s billing project management, team time monitoring or anything else — your time needs do not stop with categorization, measuring and tracking.
To solve that problem, RescueTime’s applications Integrates with a huge range. They’ve an API and direct integrations with applications.
Whether you are Time tracking into invoicing applications like FreshBooks or a project manager that needs to collate team member’s time, RescueTime will integrate with it.
Cons of RescueTime
Like any software RescueTime is Nor can it be the ideal fit for everyone. Here’s some pitfalls that I’ve noticed through the years. Computer Software Icon
Default Get Focused! Groups
Generally, RescueTime’s classes good. Websites like Reddit, Facebook and Twitter are”Very Distracting”…for many people. And for overall monitoring, RescueTime’s classes are fast & simple to repair.
However, RescueTime’s categories News, research websites and sites’ subdomains.
I can not use the Get Focused! Performance for any Task that needs research (aka visiting a bunch of different websites).
The time I need smart blocking Functionality is when I’m doing research for a post
There is a fine line between which is effective and When I’m researching, This really is distracting. It would be great to use RescueTime, but the categories are not accurate enough for it to work.
The root issue is the Block Sites work Is not available in reverse (ie, add specific sites to block). I can only add websites to unblock.
And if I am visiting several dozen blocked websites — Adding them becomes the time wasting.
If you are looking for an program that will block Specific sites — RescueTime isn’t it.
Effectiveness vs. Efficiency
RescueTime (or any time management applications ) Heightens the prejudice towards efficiency over effectiveness.
If you do the wrong thing for 18 hours Every Day, Every day with focus that is ideal — you are doing the thing that is incorrect.
The most important factor in time direction is to Work on the right things .
And that. RescueTime Can not fix that issue.
In certain ways, in fact, RescueTime can hurt your By pushing you towards efficient doing over planning, research and approach efforts.
If effectiveness is your core issue RescueTime is not for you. It will only make matters worse.
I’d recommend reading a few of these books.
RescueTime has been an invaluable tool for me personally. It’s not for everyone and has some attribute quirks and disadvantages.
That said, the thing is perspective. It’s easy to think that you just”work a ton” or are”not addicted to your phone” or”invest so much time composing” or are”hardly ever on Facebook.”
But the information does not lie. And utilizing RescueTime to Get precise time data onto your time will be able to assist you put your own life and conserve your time. Computer Software Icon
